584718 2007-08-26 02:19:00 Hi all
Hope you are having a beautiful weekend :)

I have an annoying hiccup.
My pc, running XP, is set to download updates automatically and up until now it has worked well. On Friday I got the small yellow shield icon to say updates were ready to install, so I clicked on it like always and it displays a bubble saying “Installing Updates...” but then it doesn’t. The shield comes back and says “Updates ready to install....”
I have shut down and rebooted and still no change.
When I shut down it shows the red, green, blue & yellow shield (saying updates will be installed) on the “turn Off” option and seems to install the update while closing down but next time I start up the little yellow shield is back.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks
Meg

584719 2007-08-26 02:22:00 What updates? If u click on the shield, which update/s does it want to install? Speedy Gonzales (78)
584720 2007-08-26 02:26:00 Just says Windows found one update. Then gives the choice of express or custom.
When I click custom it reads:
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)

584721 2007-08-26 02:45:00 Be very careful here . . this is a current screw-up at M$ and it has dire consequences!!!!

The WGA parity test is all bollixed up and if you don't get the updates installed . . . the next problem will likely be that you will be denied use of XP . . and here's what's going on . . .

The WGA confirmation process is hanging up in M$s servers . . and has been for a couple of days now (according to Leo Laporte (http://leoville . com/)) and if you reboot while you don't have the update successfully installed, you will get your XP account or right to upgrades . . canceled .

Leo spent some 15 minutes at the front of his Saturday show here on KFI and Stickam ( . stickam . com/profile/leolaporte" target="_blank">www . stickam . com) about this . . . and there is no resolution YET!

This is no small thing . . so if anyone has this trouble . . DO NOT REBOOT!

You must resolve this issue before you shut down your system . . . . either that or leave the puter running until you do so .

The Saturday podcast (Twit) has issued this warning . . . . M$ CAN shut your system down if they suspect you are running an non-WGA-authorized copy of XP .

I have received a few e-mails from a friend or two about this same problem . . although I have it all running well . . . there are gonna be a lot of people who are going to be burning up the phone lines come Monday morning, calling M$ .

Hopefully it's not as wide spread as I have heard . . . but be careful Upsidedown Land until this gets sorted out . . . and remember that M$ is in the US . . so you have to wait till they get to the office on Monday . . . and that's not your Monday!

584723 2007-08-26 02:52:00 what if I go and do a manual update??? meg_h_nz (6960)
584724 2007-08-26 03:19:00 Like I said . . I do know that this has not affected me . . . so I cannot speak from experience . . but if what Leo says is 1/2 true . . then there's gonna be a lot of consternation soon .

I would try anything like manual installs if I could . . and if you are let back into the site, then I guess you are OK so far .

As a matter of principle, I allow the updates to download and then ask me for permission to install them . . . and I always chose the CUSTOM installation process . . . never EXPRESS .

If you let M$ feed you what they want, you'll also have WMP11 in a moment's opportunity .

If you are allowed, try to get an update history from the Windows Update site and see what you've missed first .

584725 2007-08-26 03:32:00 I have been to MS and I cant do a manual download as it says the update is downloaded and ready to be installed. I have checked my update history and havent missed anything important.
I always chose custom at install too so I can see what is going on. I wonder if anything I am running is stopping it from installing?
I might try closing down a few things and see how it goes......
See you soon......hopefully

584726 2007-08-26 03:44:00 OK
So I shut down a few background things and I click install.
It all goes through and ends with "Installation Complete"
Cool.......
But give it a few seconds an the yellow shield is back again with the same message......

Anyone else???
I cant be the ONLY one surely?

Meg:confused:
