584800 2007-09-03 09:17:00 What say the recovery partition is damaged ?

From what you have advised so far, as it cant get into the recovery partition, I would think its damaged.
The recovery partition should remake a new partition as an option if the original partition is damaged. I,ve actually blown away the main partition before on compaqs, and thats exactly what it asked.

Just out of interest I have just rung Compaq 8.35 PM Monday night.

I have a customers Compaq SR1710AN, I asked how much for a set of recovery CD's. No other details were given except that I was in NZ.

Answer: $66.00 + GST, that is for the CD's/ postage delivered to your address. 3-5 days. Express would be $77.00+GST 1-2 days.

Thats nothing to even think about. - and you would then have the actual CD/DVD.

I've just taken a laptop back today to a customer, it cost them $250 for me to repair ( time charged) and I had to make new recovery DVD's /reinstall because their kid installed some sort of rubbish that blew most of the reg away in Vista.

584801 2007-09-04 10:04:00 When I was talking about calling them, I meant to call Compaq/HP. And I was telling him how to talk them (HP) out of a set of recovery disks. It has nothing to do with M$.
The problem is that when the owners kid installed XP over Vista it made it so that the F11 at bootup can't get to the recovery partition. The partition should be there intact. (That takes a bit more work to remove.)
My suggestion was all about killing the XP and restoring to Vista that came with the system.

Agreed - The recovery partition should be there intact, espically if XP was installed from a XP CD and not a recovery CD, as it should only format what would be the C: drive.

As mentioned - I have actually blown away the main partition, leaving the hidden recovery and the F11 or F10 key depending on the Laptop, has still worked perfectly, as it automatically rebuilds the other partition if its not there.

[Original section of post] Since he doesn't like Vista at all, he would prefer to have XP, but where can we find the XP drivers? [End]

Personally I still think in the long run, it would be a lot less work to get the Vista recovery disc's one way or another than try to recover from what looks like a damaged recovery partition. The price of the Disc's are not alot.

If XP was installed it still has to be a legal product code, not installed on any other machine. LOTS of people think that you can install your XP OS on as many machines as you want. - Very few ever read the licence agreement that they click F8 to agree to when installing. I have once - only once lol.

I have read it once also. (A long time ago.) The only time you can install XP on another machine legally is if the first machine bites the dust. You can only run it on one machine at any given time. But if you install it on another machine you will probably have to call microsoft to do the activation. Have to tell them that the first one is not functioning.
I had a computer I had to change the motherboard. When it came to activation I had to call m$ and activate over the phone.

I'm looking for the drivers for XP now. I'll let you know what I find.
(I have had far too much experience driver hunting. lol)

The links on the first page will get you part of the way there. Let us know what is still missing after you install those drivers.

584804 2007-09-05 02:41:00 Here is a link to the motherboard specs: h10025.www1.hp.com

It gives the chipsets that are used on that board.
You might have to use the nforce drivers as well as the gforce drivers. The only Nforce drivers they have listed that include the integrated gforce drivers are for vista. If you use the seperate packages you should be ok.

Yipee! :D

I would still try to talk HP/Compaq out of the recovery disks.
You never know. If they decide to switch back to Vista it will be an option.

(Besides they already paid for Vista.)
