Download Knoppix (linux.softpedia.com), its a Live CD that will read your system if its able. Boot from the CD, making sure you have a removable HD plugged into the Laptop. Boot from this CD and Locate then copy / paste the data if its there still to the removable drive.
To make the removable drive writable you right click the drive which will be on the desktop then change the read/write properties.

584847 2007-08-26 10:03:00 Oh I don't need any of the data back. Sure it was annoying losing months of programming, but all I really want to do is get my girlfriend's laptop running again.

I am running format c:

Then I'll try the restore CD again to install Windows etc back on.

I'll keep you posted and thanks very much for your help.

584849 2007-08-26 12:29:00 To restore your NEC Versa to its original shipping state, refer to Chapter 7 of the NEC Versa SX
User’s Guide for detail instructions about using the Product Recovery CD. Use Partition Restore
to partition the drive into two partitions: the first partition must be 6 GB and the second partition
will be the remaining drive space.

It can't actually Run the CD at the moment. I did the format c: and now it might be write protected?

Thanks for the link, I may be able to get the keyboard off now.

584853 2007-08-26 12:38:00 Thanks for the link.

It doesn't cover why the Restore CD is not working. I have done a Restore before, but I haven't stopped it while it was formatting before.
