584776 2007-08-26 21:00:00 Thanks for the suggestions and links guys. I'll see what I can flush out with those. Grimy (3041)
584777 2007-08-26 21:06:00 They went naked on the net.

They need:

A 3rd party firewall
at least 2 anti-spyware programs. AdAware and SPybot is a good start.
BoClean is a good resident shield as well.

An antivirus - not Nortons

Turn off unnecessary services, which are a security hole.

Advice in how to surf safely.

This should all be done before even connecting to the net.

584778 2007-08-26 21:17:00 Yes, they went through the procedure of making an account and connection with the set up CD that Clear provided. I was called over when they weren't sure if things were working properly, so they didn't just connect up and start surfing around.
I took over a CD with Spy Bot, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm and AVG to load on, but things weren't working too good then.
I believe they have two problems, an internet connection one ( as descibed in another post) and a PC problem (or two!).
I'm going to burn a CD with all the other programs people here have suggested and see if I can clean things up for them a bit.

584779 2007-08-27 02:21:00 Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts. I downloaded and burnt to CD CCleaner, Shoot the messanger, Rogue Remover, Trojan Remover, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Zone Alarm. Also the Norton Removal Tool, and the latest AVG anti-virus.
Armed with that I spent 2 1/2 hours installing, scanning, updating, scanning again and at the end we had removed 9 Trojans and a bit of spyware.
When I left, the neighbours (who say a very big thank you to you all) had email and web access. I still have Ad-Aware not wanting to update or scan, but I'll leave that for another day.
Now I just have to make sure they keep things up to date and do their scans.
On my system I have used Spybot,Ad-Aware,Zone Alarm and AVG for years, and I've never had a problem with viruss (what's the plural of virus?), spam, or other nasties. I was blown away by how much stuff was on their PC when all they had done was try to connect to the internet for the first time. I've just got to convince them that it won't always be that scary!
Again, thanks to you all and I'll leave the next problem post for a few days!!
Graham.
