584557 2007-08-26 08:24:00 Sounds just like my one was before I added a front intake fan.
Just my :2cents: worth but I would add a front intake fan. They are cheap and cost effective.

I have fan controll software with my MoBo utilities but I never use it.

All the best in your temp lowering quest:)

Meg

Thanks for sharing your experiences :)

584558 2007-08-26 08:40:00 before you go spending $$ check your case temp, if its not to high then you don't need xtra fans.

also depending oncase adding a rear fan might be better. do rear fans fist then front.

584559 2007-08-26 09:26:00 Clean all the crap out of the cpu heatsink, get SpeedFan from here:

584560 2007-08-27 07:11:00 Another thing you may want to do is take the cpu and heatsink out. Separate them and gently clean all thermal-grease off both surfaces (credit card works well), then re-apply the thermal-grease - sparingly. Too much is bad, too little wont hurt.

Have had problems like this before and doing the above dropped the temp by 20+ degrees.

oh and by the way, 70+ degrees is way too fu**ing hot, should be more around the 45+ mark.

584562 2007-08-27 09:34:00 at the moment my computer is idling at 19 degrees with both case fans off an only the CPU, GFX and PSU fans running slowly - aftermarket coolers are great :D MAC_H8ER (5897)
584563 2007-08-27 11:08:00 totally agree with Demon hunter, much too hot and likely to do with your cpu heatsink & fan. It may not be attached properly or sitting flat on the cpu or the thermal compound was not applied correctly.

Dunno about the credit card - I use a tiny amount of alcohol and a paper towel myself.

It's important not to touch the cpu / heatsink surfaces where they meet, or the heatsink paste either. Oils from your skin can break down the thermal compound and reduce it's effectiveness. A latex glove works well, or put your hand inside a plastic bag, then smear a thin film evenly over the top of the CPU.

Make sure the heatsink is reattached properly - if it comes off bye bye CPU.

If you are nervous about trying any of this get help!

Also in my exp most cases don't benefit much from a front intake fan, the only real benefit IMO is when they blow air between the HDDs to help cool them. Otherwise the rear exhaust fans are already drawing in air.

584564 2007-08-27 12:26:00 So, can I say that the CPU heatsink plays a vital role in cooling? And the case fans are mainly for transferring the heat out of the case? bk T (215)
584565 2007-08-27 21:59:00 case fans take hot air out and bring cool air into the case. you can't cool a heatsink very well if the air is hot. eg if case temp is 50 degrees then even with a good heatsink your going to get 70 degrees on the cpu.

its important to get the case temp as low as possible, not only for all the other parts of the pc but it makes the cpu heatsink more efficent.

584566 2007-08-27 23:34:00 You may wish to have a browse through a previous thread (pressf1.co.nz) that was about cooling your pc Bozo (8540)
