585215 2007-08-27 19:05:00 GA7VTXH+ gigabyte socket A
320 gig seagate Hard Drive
OS win2k (tried xp pro also same result)
file system NTFS

On loading the os only 131.5 gig is detected by the os
On bootup the drive seems to be correctly identified by the BIOS ie it displays 320 gig and cylinder head sector information.

Things I have tried

load the os then partition the unused space remaining undetected by os reboot, result blue screen

partition, load the os result blue screen (still only 131 gig detected on install other partition detected as damaged by os on install).

mannually enter drive parameters into bios, os detects complete partition but blue screen on boot after install

The bios listed drive sizes only go to 131gig.

I have been to the gigabyte site looking for a bios flash but there none listed for this error for this motherboard

This machine belongs to friend and he tells me with the os installed on a smaller drive and the 320 gig slaved it is detected correctly by os.

The drive is not pinned to restrict detected size

Any suggestions/ideas why win2k will only detect 131 gig and why it blue screens as indicated.

Thanks in advance

585216 2007-08-27 20:33:00 What about the service packs?

Was SP1 or 2 installed when XP was installed? And is SP4 installed now?

And what version of the BIOS is on it now?

585217 2007-08-27 20:38:00 Because as Speedy says, you need the service pack for WIndows to recognise the full size. pctek (84)
585218 2007-08-27 21:12:00 I also got a 320GB HDD for my Pentium 3 machine and the BIOS only shows 136GB! But when I went to disk management, it showed the whole 320GB. Than again I had XP Pro with SP 2 installed, not too sure for Win2k though, have a look under disk management anyways and see what it says. ronyville (10611)

585222 2007-08-27 21:22:00 Well try it in safe mode.

Or the only other thing you can do is slipstream SP4 on the CD. And reinstall Windows.

Yours is a different problem. You need to update your BIOS. He needs the service pack.
