584902 2007-08-26 19:25:00 Hi,

I have a customer with a problem in which their computer seems to freeze as it begins to display the XP logo when it starts up (as it fades in), then resumes starting up normally a few minutes later.

I've never encountered this before, and Google hasn't turned up anything, so any ideas on how to solve this?

The PC is completely stable apart from this, and I already did a pass of memtest86 and a rigorous stress test before selling the PC (stayed well under 50 degrees on full load).

Specs:

Core 2 Quad Q6600
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
2x 320GB HDD (not in RAID)
Windows XP Home
Asus P5K motherboard

I would try with only 2GB.

All the drivers up-to-date for mainboard etc?

584904 2007-08-26 22:05:00 Only using 2GB is not really an option. 4GB with XP works fine. It can only see 3.25GB (because it's 32 bit) but I've done that many times before and never had problems.

The drivers were all up to date when I built the PC a week or so ago.

584905 2007-08-26 22:11:00 Could be a driver issue, as the point you mention is when the drivers are loading. Try starting in safe mode and see if that makes any difference.
At worst it will narrow it down.

You said the pc was up to date a week ago, did it hang then or something that has just started?

That is a beast of a machine......

It sure is.

I did ask him to check if any USB devices were plugged in when it did this, and he's trying to work that out now. My first suspicion was a USB memory stick, as I've had booting delays result from them before (though not at this stage of booting IIRC).

If that doesn't turn out to be it, I'll get him to try it in Safe Mode etc, and perhaps update all the drivers again.

It never did this while I had it, during which time I started it up probably 15 times (a wild guess). The guy didn't say exactly how often this occurs but it sounds like it was pretty random. He hasn't encountered it again since he e-mailed me.

If he can get it to happen in Safe Mode that'll be great as it would show the file that's causing the problem (hopefully).

wainuitech, as far as I know nothing has changed since I shipped the PC, but I have asked the owner if anything is different when it has this problem (ie USB devices plugged in etc).

It sounds to me rather like some hardware device taking ages to respond to something.

584909 2007-08-28 00:16:00 Tne Answer of - "No ones touched anything, or NO Nothing was altered or added" sounds familar.

How many service tech's have heard that one  Its Mr Nobody again:)

584910 2007-08-28 00:30:00 Yep, I know what you mean. They haven't replied yet though, so we'll see. I hope it's something simple. george12 (7)
