| 584832 | 2007-08-26 07:24:00 | Still on the subject of problems with the neighbours PC. This popped up: "An error has occurred in the script on this page Line 60 Char.3 Error: Object required Code:0 URL:hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm Do you want to keep running scripts on this page? Yes/No" Also while trying to uninstall Norton AntiVirus (an old program they have had, for years, but not used or updated), which I thought may have been a problem, the following popped up: "System Information Can't Collect Information Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation Software. Windows Management Files may be moved or missing". Norton will not uninstall, as mentioned in another thread, the PC is not running well, although was before running the Clear dial up set up CD, but apart from getting into the Clear homepage they can't get to any other website, so I don't know how they could have picked up a virus. |

| 584833 | 2007-08-26 10:58:00 | To get Norton's out down load Norton Removal Tool (service1.symantec.com) That may fix some of the problems right away, this tool rips Nortons out when it's damaged. Download Ccleaner from my sig and run that also , may as well do spybot as well. |

| 584834 | 2007-08-26 21:10:00 | Thanks, will try those. I had Spybot, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm and AVG on a disc to load to make their PC a bit safer, but didn't get further than downloading AVG before the gremlins struck. Could it be because the PC already had Norton 2003 on it (I didn't realize that when installing AVG)? Causing a conflict? |

| 584835 | 2007-08-27 02:22:00 | Thanks to everyone who responded to my posts. I downloaded and burnt to CD CCleaner, Shoot the messanger, Rogue Remover, Trojan Remover, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Zone Alarm. Also the Norton Removal Tool, and the latest AVG anti-virus. Armed with that I spent 2 1/2 hours installing, scanning, updating, scanning again and at the end we had removed 9 Trojans and a bit of spyware. When I left, the neighbours (who say a very big thank you to you all) had email and web access. I still have Ad-Aware not wanting to update or scan, but I'll leave that for another day. Now I just have to make sure they keep things up to date and do their scans. On my system I have used Spybot,Ad-Aware,Zone Alarm and AVG for years, and I've never had a problem with viruss (what's the plural of virus?), spam, or other nasties. I was blown away by how much stuff was on their PC when all they had done was try to connect to the internet for the first time. I've just got to convince them that it won't always be that scary! Again, thanks to you all and I'll leave the next problem post for a few days!! Graham. |
