584765 2007-08-26 07:14:00 Hi, following from my neighbours internet problems, since they have opened their account, as soon as they open IE or OE the following message pops up;
"Message from System to Alert on 26/8/2007 5.50.37pm
Stop! Immediate Attention Required
Windows has found Critical System errors.
Download Registry Cleaner from:www.key32.com
Failure to act now may lead to data loss and corruption".
You close that box and another one pops up immediately saying:
"Visit www.registrycleanerxp.com immediately"
You keep closing these boxes and eventually they stop popping up-for a while.
The computer seems very slow and unresponsive. They are sure they have not clicked on the okay button on any of the messages.
How dodgy is this site and how do I stop the error messages coming up?
Thanks.

584766 2007-08-26 07:40:00 Get rogueremover in my sig, and trojan remover it sounds like rogue software. DON'T install it. Or go to that site.

Sounds like that PC is full of adware/spyware.

584767 2007-08-26 07:43:00 I 'm not sure how, as they only created their account yesterday and haven't been able to go to any other site than the Clear home page.
Can I download those programs on my PC and burn them to disc to use on their machine?

trojan remover (www.simplysup.com)

Rogueremover (files3.majorgeeks.com)

Those links will download both files. Install both, update both then click on scan.

If they cant click on these, you can burn them, u may have to finalise the cd so their cd can read it.

Or if you've got something like a flash disk copy them to that...thats if their PC has USB 2 ports.

Thats known as a drive by download, you only have to go onto the internet, be in the wrong place wrong time with out good protection and:badpc: its installed.

Simple rule for any of those types of messages / infection DONT ever pay or go to the site suggested unless you actually installed the software in the first place. even then double check that its a legit problem - in other words ask some place like here if unsure.

584771 2007-08-26 08:26:00 I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago.
I think if I remeber right, I found the culprit in msconfig.
Might be a good idea to check in there anyway as part of the cleanup.
Cheers.

584772 2007-08-26 08:35:00 Can a mod merge this thread (pressf1.co.nz)

And this thread (pressf1.co.nz)

I would say theyre related.

Otherwise the 3 different threads, about the same thing, will confuse people.

Grimy if your threads are about the same thing (your neighbour's PC), post them in the same thread.

Or people will have to post in 3 different threads.

584773 2007-08-26 08:43:00 Sorry about that Speedy, yes they are related to the same PC, was just worried that it may have been too much in one post.
Sparky, what should I be looking for in msconfig?
Thanks,
Graham.

lol dont be worried some of the threads in here are 20-30 pages long!

See if there are any strange names under msconfig / startup tab. Thats if it opens.

Tell us whats there (the filename) if youre not sure.

It'll be better if u can download those programs, hopefully they'll detect whatever and remove them for you.
