585425 2007-08-28 06:26:00 Hi, While working on a computer I notice it is running Windows XP, but only with SP1. I have a (PC World) disc with SP2 on it. A few questions;
Has anyone had problems loading SP2? Are there any known surprises I should expect? As there are 80-odd updates since SP2 was released, I have the option of downloading them via Windows Update (which will take forever on dial-up), or I have visited this site http://wud.jcarle.com -Windows Updater, and I gather I can download SP2 and all the updates together (I'm on broadband), burn them to a disc and install the lot in one hit.
Has anyone done this? Or is it safer to do the slow, first option?
It's not my computer, so I don't want to shag it trying to take shortcuts.
Or I guess I could pretend I never saw it only had SP1 and never ask them how their PC is going!

585426 2007-08-28 06:36:00 I would say the most important task to do before installed XP SP2 is to make sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a full system scan.
You will also need to download and install Spybot, Trojan Remover and any other spyware/malware removal software that you may use.
Update all of them and run scans.

Once you are sure your machine is clean then install SP2.

585427 2007-08-28 07:01:00 After you are sure there is no malware etc and installed SP2 get AutoPatcher for XP. zqwerty (97)
585428 2007-08-28 07:12:00 I have installed and run Trojan Remover/Rogue Remover/AVG/Ad-Aware. Do you have a URL for Autopatcher? Thanks. Grimy (3041)

You need August Core, watch out for what you tick, wga for example, read around a little on the site before you do this instal.

Watch out for which media player version you instal, you don't have to do everything at once. Take your time there are many choices including some really useful reg hacks.

Best to download off the Torrent if you can:

autopatcher.m2ys4u.co.uk

Be aware there are also addons which you should look at, for Office and a number of other things.

585430 2007-08-28 08:25:00 I use the Windows Updates Downloader (WUD) each month to get updates and it is great! MS's site takes forver to download them and you can only use them on ONE computer! :annoyed: Using WUD, you only need to download the updates once, then run the batch file (below) on each PC you wish to patch .

You probably need to install SP2 (I have had very few problems with it) because only XP SP2 is supported by MS .

What I do is I download all the updates from the WUD site and run a batch file on them all . This installs them all in one hit with no restarts (and no WGA for that matter!)

FIRST OF ALL: INSTALL XP SP2!

To run a batch file on each file, do this:
1 . Download all available updates for Windows XP from WUD, put in C:\XP
2 . Download and install Folder Scavenger and get all the filenames of the updates
3 . Paste this info into Excel
4 . Save as . xls file
5 . Open Access and import . xls file . Let Access use a primary key .
6 . Save as . mdb
7 . Make a new mail merge in Word, using file name and use both fields (ID and filename)
8 . Type this, adding merge fields when appropriate:
echo Installing Update <filename>, number <ID> of X (total number of updates)
start /wait "C:\XP\<filename> /passive /norestart"
9 . Merge this info to a new doc
10 . Paste resulting stuff into Notepad
Add this code to top of batch file:
@echo off
title Installing Updates

Add this code to the end of the batch file:
echo Updates now installed . Remember to restart your computer!
pause

Save as Updates . bat in C:\XP .

11 . Restart your computer, close any Antivirus apps and disconnect from the internet .
12 . Take a deep breath and double-click Updates . bat and come back in ~1 hour (or wait while the # complete slowly climbs!)
13 . Restart your PC once all updates have completed .

Congratulations! Your PC is now patched!

585431 2007-08-28 08:50:00 Thanks zqwerty, so with Autopatcher I can download the August Core to my PC (I have all the updates on mine), burn a CD and go and load it on the other computer?
Does the core include SP2, or do I install that first from the CD I already have? I'll have a good read of the site soon as I have a bit of time, but it looks good.
Jwil1 - thanks for your instructions, but it sounds a bit beyond me!

585432 2007-08-28 09:05:00 As regards Autopatcher, I have already downloaded the May Core, June, & July updates. Can I just download the August updates or I have to download the August Core & updates together? Notice that the August Core is >300MB! bk T (215)
585433 2007-08-28 09:37:00 From what I read on the site, you'll only need the August updates as you already have the core and previous updates. Grimy (3041)
585434 2007-08-28 09:40:00 bk T, there was a new version of AutoPatcher available May I believe, check that but if you have the first Core version of the new series ie May core then just keep getting the update and run them then run AutoPatcher. So just get the Aug update.

Grimy, yes you can, transfer the download to your new install and run it there. Once you have the entry in Program Files after you have installed it on the computer you wish to update if you wish, at any time, you can copy that to a cd and move it to multiple computers to upgrade them as well, a sweet bonus.

Also PLEASE note AutoPatcher RELIES on SP2 being installed it does not do that so don't try without SP2 or there will be problems. Others on the site have tried that in error and got into trouble.
