| 585703 | 2007-08-30 11:25:00 | Regarding the data on your drive, if you don't need it then wipe away the partition - for all purposes the data is then gone ( but recoverable if you have the equipment / know how.) Yeah I managed to get rid of the partition and did a format using DiscWizard, entire process took less than 2 mins :( . Knowing that IT WAS faulty, used Xp formating tool, progress wouldnt budge after 60% :badpc: However there were A LOT OF CLICKS! LOOKY what I found (www.seagate.com) Seagate NZ contact details, scroll down the page to New Zealand. Can't do much better than straight to the NZ Agent. Yeah I already gave Seagate an email (must say they already gave me an actual answer reply, less than 2 hrs after I've sent in my email :stare: , thats fast) and had already processed a Return form on their site. Now I'm stuck in between whether I am suppose to send in the HDD at my own expense or they will send me a package for me to send back the HDD. Reading from their Refund Policy (www.seagate.com) it does sound like I'll have to send it back to SINGAPORE at my own expense (around $75 for 1-5 days delivery to singapore :dogeye: ). However will probably give morning star an email and ask them a few things before I do any thing drastic. Thanks again for the links and tip :D |

| 585705 | 2007-08-30 20:52:00 | Never mind about my previous post (#31), I do need to send off the HDD at my own expense. If any one is interested this is what Seagate said when I asked how they process the HDDs once it reaches their company: Seagate takes measures to ensure the security of all of our customer's personal, confidential data. When a drive arrives at our returns depot facility, it will first be tested. During the first phase of testing it is low-level formatted which completely wipes it of any and all data from sector 0 to the last sector. As a returning defective drive, if the drive is not in a functional state capable of a low-level format, the drive is disassembled and the platters (where the data is stored) are recycled. Once a platter is removed from the spindle of a hard drive, the data is no longer readable by any means. |

Knowing that IT WAS faulty, used Xp formating tool, progress wouldnt budge after 60% :badpc: However there were A LOT OF CLICKS! Did you ever use SeaTools to diagnose the fault or just the XP format tool? Did you read the Seagate bit that says "Seagate will replace the drive without charge with a functionally equivalent replacement product. Seagate may replace a product with a product that was previously used, repaired and tested to meet Seagate specifications." Morning Star may not have been the source that your retailer used. Then AFAIK there may still be a charge to return through them. What size is your drive? If you thought it was old it may also be smallish by today's standards. That's the trick with 5 year warrantees, you pay half the value of a new larger one to get a secondhand small one back with only the remainder of your original warranty left. Edit "During the first phase of testing it is low-level formatted which completely wipes it of any and all data from sector 0 to the last sector." - you can do that yourself with SeaTools, that often fixes things. |

| 585707 | 2007-09-03 06:31:00 | Sorry for the late reply, thought no one would post in this post again. Yeah I've used Seagate's tool and varies of other tools, none is able to do a deep format. Those 1-2 sec format yes....but not those long format, I would assume they're called 'low level format' ? All the programs either fails to detect the HDD or get stuck while trying to format the HDD. And yeah I did read that policy (regarding they will/may replace it with an equivalent replacement), personally I dont quite mind, long as its another working HDD. However all this is assuming they will accept my HDD. The HDD is 120GB, small I know, though if I can spend around $30-$40 to get another working 120GB HDD, I think it'll be fine. And yeah the idea of the postage costing more than a new HDD did pop into mind, though $30-$40 for a working 120GB...should be worth it...right? Those people are very tricky with their warranty :D |
