| 585693 | 2007-08-30 00:05:00 |  No a phillips doesn't work, does it :p Go to your hardware store. Theyre not usuaully to hard to find. I think 75%+ users on the PF1 forums would agree that Seagate is the brand to go for, the 5 year warranty being one of the drawcards. Also, they just seem to be better, quieter (usually) and much less prone to failure than a lot of other brands. The prices are six to one, half a dozen to the other, if you shop around you can always get a good deal on a HDD. Yeah most of my HDDs are seagate, though never really knew why I purchased them over WD. However only recently did I consider to buy a seagate due to their 5yr warranty. Talking about warranty and HDDs, I would like to ask two more questions. How would you claim the 5 yr warranty from seagate (would you need to reg the HDD with them)? And if it does fail within the warranty period, when you send it back, would privacy be an issue (eg all your files, movies, music, credit card, password etc)? Would they care? Or would you (PF1 Users) care? |

Heres ( . seagate . com/www/en-us/support/warranty_&_returns_assistance/" target="_blank">www . seagate . com) the link regarding Seagate warranties, along with all information . But thats from Seagate, not if you return the drive to The local reseller - I spose its a case of " Can you Trust" the shop . |

Thanks for the link, used the link and found out my defected/partially broken HDD still have its warranty till 2010  . And to think that I was gonna open it up and play around with it :p Has any one used Seagate warranty services? Are my corrupted files safe with them :illogical |

| 585697 | 2007-08-30 04:23:00 | A lot of faulty drives have OS file system errors rather than anything physically wrong with them. You could always try the Seagate utility to check it out then if it's OK overwrite everything and start again. | PaulD (232) | ||
| 585698 | 2007-08-30 07:41:00 | What is the Seragate HD actually doing or not doing as the case may be to make you think it may be faulty ? Regarding warranty claims, done 2 out of the manyyyyyyyy seagate drives, but that was through one of my suppliers -Morning Star (http://www.morningstar.co.nz/) I don't know where you got your drive from, but you could always call them and see if they handle warranty replacements, or at least they may be able to advise you. |

Ah I see, the HDD that I'm thinking of claiming was a HDD that I brought about 3 years ago from XpComputers, after a yr since purchase it started clicking . . . files on their slowly became corrupted or unaccessible . . . then detecting the HDD became a problem too(not saying it cant be detected, but very difficult at times) . Formating became a problem as well, wouldnt go past 60% :badpc: . At that time I thought that HDD only had a year warranty with XPComputers, so once I recovered (spent several days and nights) the 'must need' files, just stored the HDD with my other random/extra comp hardwares in hoping that once I get some free time I'll open it up and look inside . However that aint gonna happen as I've just found out the HDD is still under Seagate's 5 yr warranty . Whether or not Seagate will do a replacement is something I aint sure about, however IF they do, I dont know if my files on there will be safe or not . |

| 585700 | 2007-08-30 08:22:00 | Forgot to ask this, but do origin of manufacture matter to you? Eg would you (Pf1 users) prefer HDD be made from Singapore or China etc? | CCF (6760) | ||
| 585701 | 2007-08-30 08:36:00 | From what you described it does sound like a possible failing drive. Hard Drives do make more noise over time - Hell I got one here had me thinking what the sound was last week, it makes a whistle for a few seconds every so often:confused: Guess I'll be replacing it sooner than later. Regarding the data on your drive, if you don't need it then wipe away the partition - for all purposes the data is then gone ( but recoverable if you have the equipment / know how.) You hit the nail on the head - XPCompuiters put a standard 1 year warranty, but the drive has a 5 year according to seagate. What I would do in your case is call Morning Star (http://www.morningstar.co.nz/) and ask them regarding warranty claims, they deal with that sort of thing all the time and could answer you or at worst point you in the right direction. You would need to provide the serial number etc, like you looked up so who ever does it can check that its still in warranty. Make sure you tell them why you are making a claim, Eg; what its doing. Your next post --- would you (Pf1 users) prefer HDD be made from Singapore or China etc? Personally who cares, if the warranty is 5 years I don't care where its made, 5 years is 5 years. A Few Minutes Later -------------> LOOKY what I found (www.seagate.com) Seagate NZ contact details, scroll down the page to New Zealand. Can't do much better than straight to the NZ Agent. |

Never ever do this, it will finish it for certain (unless you have a 'clean room' to eliminate all dust/contamination) :horrified PS sorry, didnt see your previous post (#18) on this point. |
