586234 2007-08-30 11:28:00 The biggest cause of a lot of PC problems are people using so called "registry cleaners"
I will agree with you here. There are few registry cleaning programs that do a very good job.
However, if anyone is stupid enough to not backup their registry before cleaning and check the items that are going to be removed by the cleaner, deserve to have their registry destroyed.

You mentioned a tool for monitoring programs as they are being installed and uninstalled to keep an eye on your registry to make sure everything that goes in, comes out. Any examples?

586235 2007-08-30 11:31:00 you do realize that when you delete a file that has previously been on your computer, very often there will be an entry in the registry which refers to the file which is no longer there, this entry will persist over many reboots and will remain unless further action is taken. I have seen this many times as the registry cleaner finds them and then I delete them if I wish.

Also many shortcuts referenced in the registry which lead no where as Speedy said and many more redundant entries which can be removed.

Regcleaners help to do that. You know how people say that you need to reinstall Windows every now and again because it slows down after a period of time, well if you use regcleaners and do a few other things you can avoid that hassle completely and keeping your old install running fast.

When one uses a regcleaner on a computer that has not been cared for you will find that hundreds of entries will be found which are safe to delete and with ccleaner you get the added benefit of cleaning megs of crap, old logs, caches from various programs, .old, .bak and many more files types which use disk space and serve no purpose. MS really does need to clean up their act.

586236 2007-08-30 11:41:00 If you have not used ccleaner then I challenge you to try this slim version and see if I am not correct about the amount of junk on your computer.

From here:

get this:

Do allow the install to put shortcuts on the recycle bin they are very useful.

Keep a record of how many megs you save by running it manually, don't just right click and run, open it and Analyse.

586237 2007-08-30 11:43:00 I agree with zqwerty fully. Use a good registry cleaner and your computer will thank you. The registry is the ONE place where you do not want crap to accumulate. CCleaner is good, thorough and makes backups. Try screwing up with that. beeswax34 (63)
586238 2007-08-30 11:44:00 I agree.
Usually when i do a scan it picks up several hundred redundant entries.
If anyone has enough time to manually go through their registry and clean it out of old/un-needed entries, they obviously have far to much time on their hands.

CCleaner FTW!!!
