585683 2007-08-29 04:56:00 Thanks a lot for everyones input.

Yeah I know that a lot of dells and HP comps have their HDD standing vertically. I used a lot of them in Uni and else where. Could be just my luck that when ever I have HDDs standing upright it just gives me problems.

Yeah as for the vibration, I just mean those that when you dump a book or books onto your desk or when you thump the desk with your hand etc :D . Those tiny little things would rattle my HDD inside the enclosure, though only when its flat on the desk, not if its standing upright :S

Though as for that 350G shock thingy...what is that in reality? As in how far would you need to drop a HDD to cause 350G shock?

As for the cushion suggestion, yeah I'm still looking for those things...must had misplaced them some where :S

According to the Western Digital document that I linked to about 2 inches if the surface it hits is hard enough. That does seem a bit extreme but I've seen some other claim that it was only 1 metre to a carpeted floor so you don't have to climb onto the roof to get there.

This is what it says on Seagates drives. Don't ask me about WD.....They probably break if you sneeze.

Anyway, who'd like to do the real world tests? A series of them perhaps. Start with throwing it off the roof and move on to dropping it out of a helicopter.....

Report your results here.

585686 2007-08-29 06:11:00 i had a hard drive that i didn't want anymore, so was throwing it round my room, and throwing it to the floor with a lot of force (wooden floor) and the dam thing still worked!

...time to hire a helicopter...

585689 2007-08-29 06:43:00 Why shouldn't they be considering the original poster was asking about horizontal or flat towers which is the form factor that the Mac mini fits. winmacguy (3367)
585690 2007-08-29 22:18:00 2 inches...boy... :waughh:

Ah...the macs, I'm surprised they didnt go for the vertical design like most modern PCs...then again MAC aint no PCs. They look so sleek :p

Just out of curiosity which brand of HDD do you (PF1 users) go for and what are your reasons? Price? Name? Specs?

Btw, just dug up an old faulty yet partially working HDD, wanted to open it up...though the screws are in a star sharp design...where can I get a screw driver with that sort of head? Tried ramming it with a Philip head...but no go :p

Yes I do know once its opened, it will never function AGAIN!

  No a phillips doesn't work, does it :p Go to your hardware store. Theyre not usuaully to hard to find.

I think 75%+ users on the PF1 forums would agree that Seagate is the brand to go for, the 5 year warranty being one of the drawcards. Also, they just seem to be better, quieter (usually) and much less prone to failure than a lot of other brands. The prices are six to one, half a dozen to the other, if you shop around you can always get a good deal on a HDD.
