585939 2007-08-29 09:35:00 Can some one please advise of a reliable piece of software to clean harddrives of data before I dispose of my old computers. Thanks PCpunter (12751)
585940 2007-08-29 10:10:00 There is probably lots of good software for that. But I went to my HD manufacturers site and downloaded their software for overwriting HD data. That was Western Digital, but I guess they all have it available. Grimy (3041)

585942 2007-08-29 10:28:00 Do you mean take the computers to the dump after erasing the HDD's completely or cleaning off user data and then selling them on as going units? zqwerty (97)
585943 2007-08-29 10:47:00 Just encrypt the hard drive with TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/) and there will be no possible way of getting the data back.
Tools that just write binary 1's to every bit of data aren't good enough, as there are programs out there that can detect the changed binary bits and reconstruct the harddrive.
TrueCrypt is a pretty awesome tool.

I read that SpyBot can shred beyond the ability of the NIS to find anything at all.

Five passes (default) are supposed to be more than enough to do it, but you can roll up the number if you like to about as far as you can stand.
