585882 2007-08-29 03:05:00 I have a acer aspire 5101 which i bought new in February of this year. In the last 3 weeks when im using the laptop on the battery it randomly freezes and i have to manually turn it off an on (with power switch) it happens quit often but only when using the battery. Could this be the battery dieing out or it is a computer.software problem?

OS: Windows Vista home premium

585885 2007-08-29 04:26:00 What sort of battery life are you getting? Does it report the battery level correctly? And how charged up is the battery when it freezes?

I suspect the battery might be at fault here.

when i am using the computer with max performance on the battery (min battery life) it says it has 1 hr 55 min but usually only lasts less than an hour. when on max battery settings it says it will last for 2.5 hrs but only lasts about 1.5 - 2 hrs.

The freezing occurs at any level of charge, even full charge.

I had a look at the power settings on windows and the hard was set to turn off after 30 min bu the freezing occurs well before 30 min.

585887 2007-08-29 08:09:00 Well the battery isn't displaying any normal signs of dying then, which is strange. It could still be it, but it seems much less likely than I originally thought.

Your power settings are fine. I'd try going into your BIOS, which is usually accessible by pressing DEL or an F key (most commonly F2 or F10), and leave it there for a while on battery power to see if it freezes.

If it does you definitely have a hardware problem which may or may not be the battery. If not, it could well be a software issue, though I'm not sure what kind of software problem could result in these symptoms.

If it's a hardware fault, and not the battery (which can be replaced for around $100), you will be unable to fix it yourself except in some strange cases, and should return it under warranty if possible.

I have found plenty of possible reasons, and they all relate to the battery.

If it runs OK on mains, then there maybe some thing wrong with the actual battery. Attaching another good known battery will tell you one way or another, get it replaced while its still under warranty if it is a dud battery.

Driftwood, to insert a hyperlink, up the top of the box where you write is a picture of the world, right under the Smiles drop down box.
Click that and a box will appear copy/paste the website address in, or type it in manually, then click OK. There will be an area of Blue within the whole address, type in something to call it Eg: Here - This - Look - The dog next door:lol: and thats it, it will then appear as an underlined link when you click "sumit Reply" you can then carry on typing after the [/URL]
