585567 2007-08-28 11:22:00 Hi Team

Not sure if its a major. I have an adsl modem that runs into a wireless router which then runs to 1 pc (wired) and a laptop (wireless) and a d-link wireless media player

the wireless router shows all connected with their respective ip addresses from the router. the unusual thing is though the laptop says its connected once booted up and after surfing 2 or 3 pages, the networking icon shows as disconnected(icon has red x) . i disconnect and reconnect the router so it drops all the ip addresses and reconnects them. the individual ip addresses are re issued but for some reason the laptop still shows as not connected to the router even though it can actually surf the net and connect to the shared network folders.

the main thing is that it connects which is fine but i would like the laptop to actually show it is connected or not?

any ideas to help fix much appreciated

cheers

585568 2007-08-28 11:29:00 Does it look like two computers with a red cross, or a computer with a wireless signal radiating from it with a cross?

If it's the first, you're looking at the icon for the LAN connecton, which is unplugged. You might need to click the < button to see the other icons.

If it's the second, you might be using a wireless card, but also have built-in wireless. Have a look in Network Connections (Start -> Right click My Network Places -> Properties) and see what you have there.

585569 2007-08-28 12:04:00 thanks for the reply george

its definately the wireless networking icon with the red x. when i view all wireless networks, theres only one showing which i called SMC as thats the make of the router . in the bottom right is "connect" . obviously when its connected, it will show "disconnect" in the bottom right.

hmmm bit of a mystery alright

585570 2007-08-28 12:14:00 It sounds like you have some software for the wireless adapter that takes over control of it from Windows. Normally, these programs work with Windows somewhat, in that they will display the icon correctly.

Do you have another icon in the same place as the disconnected one that gets you into the software for the card?

If it is set up this way, right click the 'disconnected' one, and go into Properties, and there should be an option to not show it in the system tray / task bar.
