2007-09-02 00:59:00 | I only can get dial-up connection. On this XP-pro PC I often find that the connection really works well and surges ahead for a spell then all of a sudden stops, sometimes for 10secs sometimes 20secs, sometimes much longer - then it starts again, runs well, and then repeats the process over and over. Rebooting doesn't seem to change it nor eliminating adware or cookies. At other times it seems to work really fine without any stoppages. At these times it runs much better than a slowish broadband connection. Does anyone know why this happens and how to resolve it (if possible). It's a real nuisance when you're trying to win an auction or download something.

2007-09-02 01:02:00 | And what adware did u have? If you had any? Could be your connection, or your ISP having probs. What speed do you connect at, when you connect?

2007-09-02 01:23:00 | Well true this forum is the worst for dialup sometimes! It can take about 30 secs -1 min to move on some days. And other days 5 secs.

2007-09-02 01:41:00 | Well it doesn't seem to matter what speed the connection is . When it stops and starts it still says it's connected at the same or similar speeds as when it runs smoothly - it just keeps stopping sometimes . Now I'm connecting at 49 . 2kbps which is the fastest I can get on my 56k modem - and it's currently running without any stops at all - just smooth and constant . Could be the server under load - good suggestion . I'll check up . Otherwise, perhaps it's certain websites when they're busy . . . I thought there may be a fix for it at my end or some other program running and causing a problem . I's just strange how it runs sweetly sometimes and stop/start at others . By the way, I'm fastidious about keeping adware, viruses and trojans out - so don't think they're the problem .

2007-09-02 03:17:00 | meh, Its just the bane of dialup. When mine comes to a standstill I shut down the browser and fire her back up, usually jumpstarts her. Not unusal to find 3 or 4 of my tabs have timed out. Hit refresh and bingo, she all comes in no issue. The fix is broadband.

2007-09-02 03:56:00 | Eureka - we've got it working - well my wife (alias MUM) happened on a website that gave us the final piece of info... www.easydesksoftware.com It said that 95 & 98 use NETBIOS but XP has been made to use TCP/IP only... Anyway, there's a workaround at the bottom of the website above. Thanks to all who gave me tips and suggestions. Much appreciated :o)
