586761 2007-09-01 03:42:00 mum bought this computer last year and it came with a dvd read/writer .

it works fine, burns and reads DVDs happily, but after mum reinstalled the operating system, it won't read DVD any more, it seems to me that it just won't recognize dvd, and it works find with any CD .

as soon as she put any DVD in the rom the computer will just freeze . :badpc:

we rang up the computer retailer asking for driver of the DVD rom(which i don't think we need it anyway), they told us that it doesn't have one, but they give us Nero burning rom, said that it will fix the problem, but after several attempt it is no luck .

what happen? what is wrong? how can i fix this problem? :dogeye:

thanks for reading this and just any kind of help will be appreciated . cheers:thumbs:

586762 2007-09-01 03:59:00 When you put a DVD in the drive, does it try to read it, as can you hear the Disc spinning, or do you get an error message ?

If you get an error message what is it please.

And what brand & Model is the DVD writer.

You can also try running system file checker.

click start /run type in "sfc /scannow" ( without the " ") it may ask for the XP CD to replace files that may be damaged.

thanks for the help.

the dvd rom do try to read the dvd sometimes, and it usually ends up it two way:
1. it trys sevel times then ends up with the indicating light flashing on and off.
2. the indicating flashes on for about 4 seconds and you can hear it spinning, but nothing happen. if you go into "my computer" and click on the "dvd rom" it opens up a window which will normally show the content of the dvd, but it shows nothing, and of cause i know there is content on the dvd and the same dvd works for my laptop.

when it is not in the mood it won't even try, as soon as you put it the dvd it freezes. well not as soon as, it is more like the rom start spinning for about 2 second then the computer freezes. sometimes it keep spinning sometimes it stops after it freezes...... no error message pops up in any case from my memory, i will ask her again tonight just to double check.

and of cause i will ask mum to try the "sfc /scannow" thing you told me.

once again thanks so much. cheers!

586764 2007-09-01 05:30:00 Hmmmmm Could also be a dirty Laser, you may want to try a Cleaning Disc to clean the laser inside the Drive.
This (www.dse.co.nz)
Sort of thing

Also what was the Make & Model of the drive please.

Just in case - are you able to get hold of another Drive to make sure the drives not faulty, so you can plug it in and see if the other drive works OK.

thanks for the help . :)

im really sorry i live in a separate place from mum and the only way to talk to her is via email at the moment, i have already sent her a email asking her the model and the brand of the drive, hopefully she will be able to find out and get back to me soon .

the drive cleaning disc is a good idea but i have this question in my mind: if the laser lens is dirty then how come it can read CD discs but not DVD discs instead of unable to read both kind of discs? ( Im not trying to be a ******* or something, i really want to find out . )

and by the way, a out of interest question for ya:

the disc in a drive never physically touches the laser lens do they? how do they work to clean the laser lens then? :waughh:

thanks for the help, cheers!

Don't be sorry that you dont live in the same place as your mum - at least you are in contact with her and thats good - many familes aren't (You know what I mean).

Your Not being a *****:D if people dont ask they don't learn- hell I wish more would.

Any way some DVD writers are sensitive to contamination, while CD's work fine, some DVD's don't.
I have had that happen in my workshop several times - Thats why I was asking about the make/model.;) Not that it may have anything to do with it, but you gotta start someplace. What makes me think it may be dirt, is you mentioned some times it works some times it doesn't.

What I would do in the work shop is remove the side of the case unplug then connect a Known good drive in and restart and see if it does the same - if Not then it's possibly software, or more than likely hardware. Then I would try the cleaner.

How do the Cleaning disc's clean - If you decide to buy one, you will see on the bottom of the Disc are several very soft/fine brushes or more modern ones use slighty different materials, but all do the same job, which when inserted in the drive and the CD spins the brush errrrrr brushes over the Lens cleaning any dust/dirt from the laser.

My cleaner is (man can't rember how old) has 6 different languges, its "interesting" if I don't select English to hear all the different instructions.

Other things that can cause the Drive to play up are faulty / lose connections, software problems, or the drive may just have gone faulty.

586769 2007-09-01 23:41:00 if you think about it you'll realise that with DVD's & CD's being the same physical size, the data is packed on much more densely on a DVD and the tracks a much closer together.

It's naturally more difficult to read DVDs and this is why drives usually start having problems reading them but still read CDs fine. I have experienced 2 separate drives which will read & write CD's but have problems with DVD.

Cleaning the lense as suggested is a good Idea as is swapping for a drive you know is good if possible.

It seems coincidental that this problem should show up after re-installing the OS though, was there anything else changed at the same time ?? has the same OS been re-installed or a different one?

As a last resort you could uninstall the IDE channel to force windows to re-detect it, and also boot up without the drive connected, then shut down, re-connect everything and re-boot. I'm dubious as to it working, but it may force windows to recognise the drive properly.

thanks for the help .

that sounds like a heck of a method but hey, you never know until you try it so i will tell my mum to give it a good go .

about the operating system, no, we did not change the operating system .

and by the way mum find out that when she double click "my computer" the drive shows up as DVD drive, but as soon as she put a DVD in it changes to CD drive . . . . . . . . :badpc:

once again thanks for the help . cheers!
