586810 2007-09-01 21:02:00 You did not say that. It is illegal to view Sky TV through a tuner other than Sky decoder. It is legal (AFAIK) to have a Sky decoder and use the AV out to go into the TV tuner, I do this. :

Thanks. As far as I understand, to watch free Nz channels and SKY TV it is enough to have just analog tv tuner. So, what for we need digital tv tuner in NZ?

It is legal to watch free to air stuff (the likes of TV1,2,3, Prime etc) but any channels that are paid (such as Sky Sport, Sky Movies etc) are illegal to watch on a tuner like this, I am not sure if you can even get Sky digital with a digital tuner other than a Sky Decoder...

They are rolling out free to air digital, I know you can get free to air DVB-S, but I am not fully sure if you can get DVB-T as yet. But it is comming.

Do you have a Sky subscription and decoder for the TVs in your house?

586813 2007-09-01 23:25:00 It's already been said, but to make it a little clearer

DVB-S is satellite, available now

DVB-T is terrestrial, uses UHF aerial, available sometime next year

It seems a bit foolish to buy a tuner at this point that doesn't do digital, but if you just want cheap tv playback for now then the ones you mention will work. They just probably won't be as good as the dearer ones in terms of picture quality & reception etc.

As for Sky, sounds like you are referring to a certain program that allows (illegally) decoding of the UHF sky channels for free. It's buggy, it's a beta that will never be finished (because they don't broadcast UHF in the country where it was made anymore), it's diificult to set up, and it requires you to have a tuner card with one of the supported chipsets. ( and no I won't give you any more information )

586814 2007-09-02 00:54:00 Many of the readily available tv tuners on the market come with the appropriate input for you to capture digital or analog sky directly for the set top box. If your going for an analog tuner then any old cheap one will be fine, if you want one compatible with Freeview then you may need to use your own initiative and read some reviews and make an informed decision. No, I havent. I've just arrived in NZ...

Thanks everybody. Now I have a very good picture about TV in NZ.
So, to watch digital satellite TV I need not only dvb-s tuner but also satellite aerial, right?

586816 2007-09-02 04:09:00 And the money to pay for it, if you want Sky Digital.

But you should get the channels for Freeview (which isnt Sky digital).

586818 2007-09-02 04:42:00 Actually you can watch UHF Sky. I know you can... I didn't say you can't, but to watch Sky UHF on something other than a Sky decoder is illegal... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
