586597 2007-09-01 20:36:00 I cleaned it out well enough that avast, spybot & hijackthis didn't show anything dodgy, but explorer wouldn't load.

I ended up reinstalling windows over top, re-running the virus scan to get rid of the remenants

Geez Greven, you're a tech, why didn't you have something like RegDefend running??

Or check the dodgy warez before running it?

And reinstalling Windows is a bit lame.

It keeps coming back because you haven't yet found/removed the main file. Like the smitfraud variants used to do......

Have a look here and go hunt around on your PC:
spywarefiles.prevx.com

All you need is safe mode, Registar Lite and Hijackthis's Remove on Boot.

Or you could bring it over and I'll clean it out for you.

586598 2007-09-02 02:25:00 yea... I really should have known better, but I was in a hurry. I haven't used regedfend before, but similar products I've used I found too annoying.

I haven't had any viruses or spyware on my own computer for over five years, and now I got this little nasty because I was in too much of a hurry.

Speedy - I backed up my data, formatted & reinstalled. It was my new media PC that I had just built, so reinstalling wasn't too bad - it was backing up all my data that I had just copied onto it that was a slow process.

OK, Ghost it.

And you really didn't need to go to such extreme measures you know. I never have yet.

I know, but sometimes it is less frustrating to nuke it & start over.
