587074 2007-09-02 07:37:00 I have a computer to look at that was not behaving. XP was way out of date. I did a windows update, which downloaded and installed a whole lot of stuff. After a restart it wanted SP2 installed. I did this, but had to go to safe mode, as it kept crashing. After installing SP2 it will no longer recognise to PCI Puretek PT3525 modem. It shows in device manager as operating correctly but I can't create a network connection as there is no device. What do I do next? wotz (335)
587075 2007-09-02 08:05:00 Delete the mode entry and reboot.

Where did you get the modem driver from??

The modem manufacturer's site, or did you get it from the Windowsupdate site?

And since it was crashing, did you scan it for malware / spyware etc, BEFORE SP2 was installed?

So the computer does not behave.

May I ask:-
Did you install motherboard drivers?
Where did you get WinXP SP2 from?
What is the ISP?
What is the computer you are working on?
How did you do the windows update "which downloaded and installed a whole lot of stuff?"
Computers do not install anything without human intervention unless you allow the computer to download and install updates without your knowledge. But you can change this and requires input via mouse or keyboard.

Speedy. When you say "Delete the mode entry and reboot." I would think that you mean "Delete the modem entry and reboot"

You may have also mentioned where this ENTRY is.

Maybe Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware.

Not to worry Speedy. I am confused by the post as well.

587078 2007-09-02 08:44:00 Ok, a bit more info.

1. I have deleted the modem and rebooted. Made no difference
2. The PC is a PCCompany (I know, but its not mine) machine, P4 2.66Gig
3. It has been slow to start up for ages
4. I have scanned it in the past, but didn't before I started this process yesterday.
5. The owner purchased an MP3 player, which isn't recognised as a removable storage device. It needs to have its software running. The software won't recognise the drive, and the help said to update windows (standard answer?)
6. I connected to the web using the modem, and went to windows update site. It had 61 patches to download and install, which took a few painful hours.
7. I was going to use my dsl, but it has no network port
8. This morning I got up and it had finished. It wanted a restart. Fair enough.
9. It then said there were updates to install - I expected this, didn't think last night would have got all of them.
10. The 1st update (may have been the only one showing) was SP2.
11. I wasn't going to download this by dial up, but had previously downloaded it on my pc.
12. Copied the SP2 file to my flash drive and ran it
13. It unpacked the file and then crashed (rebooted). This happened repeatedly.
14. Booted into safe mode to install it. Got a warning it shouldn't be done in safe mode unless it wouldn't install in normal mode, so I went ahead.
15. SP2 installed OK
16. Went to go to windows update again to check for any more, but the shortcut to the ISP was gone (PCConnect)
17. Went to create dial up connection, but couldn't as there was no device.

I hope this helps a bit more.

587079 2007-09-02 09:03:00 Was SP1 or 2 installed, when this person tried to use this MP3 player?

If SP1 or 2 wasnt installed that would be one reason why it didnt work (SP1 or 2 needs to be installed). If the MP3 player is USB 2.

Hmm these drivers may work (translate.google.com)

Does the modem STILL appear under Phone and Modem options / modem tab?

In Control Panel?

When you copied the SP2 file to the flash drive/disk, where did you run it from?

The flash drive or did you copy it to the hdd then run it?

It would seem SP2 was not installed, seeing as the PC wanted to install it. Can't say for SP1, but it wasn't in the list of downloads last night, so assume it was.

I downloaded those files. The setup file installed 2 modem to 2 different ports, but no go. When I tried to install a modem manually, choosing the location of the files, it came up blank on the screen to choose the hardware (I think that is what it was)

It shows in the device manager, but as a v56soft or something like that. I delete it and the PC finds it again. I haven't checked the phone and modem options, and the machine is not currently hooked up to screen, etc.

From the flash drive

587081 2007-09-02 09:28:00 From the flash drive

That may have been why it crashed, unless it was extracting to the hdd.

There may not have been enough space on the flash drive if it was extracting to this instead.

587082 2007-09-02 10:44:00 So, should I try installing it again, copying the file to the HD first? If so, how do I roll back pre SP2, or can I do it again over the top. wotz (335)
587083 2007-09-02 14:35:00 if the cpu is a prescott and I'm not sure they made em 2.66ghz then you NEED to install the sp2 prescott update BEFORE you install sp2 or the system will possibly not boot.... drcspy (146)
