586885 2007-09-01 10:40:00 Hi

I have a computer here with a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card (OEM version) and the line in / mic port appears to be intermittant.

Motherboard: Asus P5K - latest BIOS and drivers
OS: Vista Home Premium - latest updates

I'm trying to get a TV tuner card running through the combined mic / line in socket, but no sound reaches the card. I have ruled out the tuner card because:

a) The output I'm plugging into the line-in DOES have sound on it
b) Other inputs, such as a microphone, do not work in the same port (in mic mode where appropriate)

It occasionally works, usually after switching the port (in the software) from mic to line-in mode, or vice versa. Switching back and forth again will kill it again though, as will a restart.

It works fine through the onboard audio. Disabling the onboard audio doesn't help. For some ridiculous reason this card doesn't have an aux-in (CD) header, so I can't connect it that way.

I did connect the front panel audio to the card originally, to later find that it is not compatible with AC'97 style front audio. Could I really have damaged the card doing this, considering that there was nothing connected to the front audio ports? The wires I connected were Ground, Mic in, Mic power, Left out, and Right out.

Another issue is that the latest drivers from the Creative don't work - I get a message saying that no supported hardware was detected. From the Creative forums I have found that this is because the card is OEM and not supported by Creative. Who IS it supported by?

I have ruled out the following:

TV tuner card (other inputs like a microphone have the same problem)
Volumes
Speakers

I suspect the following:

The card is faulty
Bad drivers (but how can I update them?)

Any ideas people? I'd rather not have the hassle of RMAing the card. Also, the buyer of the PC, who was there when I built it, says that any workaround is fine with him. If I can get it so the tuner goes into the onboard sound card but is played through the X-Fi into his 5.1 system, he'll be very happy. I can't seem to get this to happen.

586886 2007-09-02 07:11:00 I found exactly the same problem some time back. I guess it depends on the TV tuner card too. What make and model is the tuner card?

My solution was to connect the TV tuner card to the X-Fi directly and internally. I used a small cable like the ones that used to be used to connect the output from a CDRom drive to the header on the motherboard or sound card.

I hope this points you in the right direction. I do use a X-Fi card and I also have a TV Tuner card but this is not currently connected.

Fairly sure we can sort this for you.

586887 2007-09-02 10:26:00 Hi, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately there is no CD-in connector, which is what you're talking about. The solder points are there, but there's no connector attached. It is beyond me why they wouldn't include something so important.

The TV card is a Winfast TV2000 XP RM, but I'm sure it's not the issue as there is definitely sound coming out of the plug I'm using. If I hook it straight up to the speaker plug with a paperclip, I hear the TV.

This is quite urgent as I need to order a replacement card today (by 4.30ish) if it's faulty.

Any ideas people?

586889 2007-09-03 04:38:00 Umm if its the Expert Tuner, it SHOULD have the connector on it (1, Ive got the same tuner here, but its not installed).

And if its the Deluxe its line out from the tuner to line in (not mic) on the soundcard.

WHAT program are you using to get the sound to work on the tuner??

Have you installed the latest Vista drivers for the tuner?

And, I also know if its the Deluxe the EEPROM can get corrupted on these PCI cards.

Thats if the drivers for it dont install properly, and the system says it may become unstable, when you go to install the drivers for the Deluxe tuner.

Its not the Deluxe its the RM, a fairly basic card but with a some nice features ;) When setting up my tv tuner i ran the the sound from the tuner into the onboard and then out of my soundblaster. It was form a different problem all together but it is possible, you'll need to tell Windows which card to use for each task and then mute the sound on the internal sound.

586891 2007-09-03 05:06:00 Hi Speedy

It's the Xtreme Audio, which is the somewhat entry level one. I can't install the latest drivers as they don't recognize the card, which is apparently (according to the internet) to do with either the card being PCI-E, or being OEM.

Pete, thanks, that's exactly what I want to do - but I can't work out how to. It's infuriating to see the moving green bar thingy (showing sound is reaching Windows), but being unable to get it out of the sound card...

586892 2007-09-03 13:48:00 Bump. I have a new card arriving tomorrow but I don't think that's it. I really don't want this PC to take any longer :( george12 (7)
