586686 2007-08-31 23:28:00 It is a long time since I used XP and I am very rusty. My partner has a Dell laptop and it gets in to windows pretty smartly but then it takes ages before it is "ready 2 go".
Where can I find what is being loaded at startup ? Have just run CC and it found almost 100 MB of crap.I have defragged, and disk cleanup, and removed restore points but there is no noticable difference. She does have a heap of games on her machine and the HDD is about 50% used.I wont go in to specs as it should not matter,it can be sped up or it cant.

586687 2007-08-31 23:32:00 You run cc and go to tools/startup.

That'll tell you whats running on startup/bootup.

Its most probably Dell's crap in startup, thats slowing it down.

586688 2007-08-31 23:43:00 What is Dells crap and is it neccessary at startup. kjaada (253)
586689 2007-08-31 23:47:00 Dont know I've never had a Dell.

So, dont know whats in startup on that laptop.

Most probably entries for their software, for whatever is on the laptop, and programs if any, if they were installed, when you brought it.

Look in the startup tab in CC, and do a search for whatever is there, in yahoo or google, see if theyre required to run on startup.

Might depend, on how much ram is on it as well.

586690 2007-09-01 00:00:00 A friend on mine got a new Dell PC a few months back and I was helping set it up and when we first powered it on, the amount of crap that was installed and loading on statup was amazing... and IIRC none of it was needed... Well I sure wouldn't have it loading... Check what it is loading at startup and report back. The_End_Of_Reality (334)
586691 2007-09-01 00:01:00 Lots of items load that are not really needed at start up, and Speedy is Correct Dell loads some crap!

Download the hijackthis from Speedys Sig and run then post it back here and we can tell you what you can disable.

586692 2007-09-01 00:06:00 Ran HJT yesterday and got rid of a bit of stuff.Have now removed a few items from startup and only have 8 left. The machine now starts up and the toolbar and desktop appears about with the "music" then the toolbar goes black and it takes over 30secs before it is all back to normal. kjaada (253)
586693 2007-09-01 00:15:00 30 seconds aint to shabby - one of my workshop PC's takes around 2 + minutes, but then its not that powerfull - only a Cel 2.4 & 1 Gb Mem. wainuitech (129)
586694 2007-09-01 00:21:00 Thanks for that.We are better off than we were so will put up with what we have. kjaada (253)
586695 2007-09-01 00:36:00 I dont suppose you have the dreaded 'norton antivirus' or internet security on the machine ?....that'll slow down any machine during startup...... drcspy (146)
