1418955 2016-04-11 23:17:00 Hello Everyone! I'm new to these forums and I've been searching for the right community to ask some help with these problems.

So I had a few issues with my PC during the process of building it. Long story short I intended to run windows 7 on it but my win 7 disk wasn't working well so I just upgraded to windows 10 and everything seemed to work fine. Here's the issues I'm having:

1. When I press the power button to turn the computer on, the lights and fans start up and everything seems to be working properly, however the keyboard and monitor are nonresponsive (I have to press scroll-lock to turn on the backlight normally, when I try it won't turn on. Monitor reads as no display) what's odd is that when I restart the computer, it will turn on with monitor and keyboard responding showing the booting process and everything seems to function somewhat normally. The strange thing is this only seems to happen every other time. Yesterday when it would normally turn on (after restarting it for the second time) it asked for a boot disk. I restarted the computer again and then a second time before it started functioning normally again. Furthermore, turning the computer off via the start menu only shuts off the monitor and keyboard. It doesn't turn off the lights or the fans in the case. Also, even when the computer is completely shut off the mouse's light remains on. I have a UPS Battery Backup, I'm not sure if this maybe affecting the computer or not.

2. Updates installed from MSI's live updates program always fail to install saying it needs the intel management engine. When I try install the management engine it says it's incompatible with the operating system.

3. I bought two 4 TB harddrives (I was planning on using this PC for light video capture and editing), neither of them work. I've tried interchanging them using the SATA ports, tried a new more powerful power supply, tried using it on a different PC and nothing. This leaves no doubt in my mind that something is wrong with them. The only reason I bring this up is that I got these two harddrives from the same manufacturer but from two different vendors about two months apart and BOTH are exhibiting an inability to function. For right now I'm using two SSDs (250 GB and 500 GB). I want to make sure that I'm not missing anything.

1418956 2016-04-11 23:33:00 Oh and I forgot to mention that the RAM set came with a RAM fan.

Also the mouse and keyboard I put are incorrect:
CM Storm Devastator - LED Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Combo Bundle (Blue Edition)

To clarify the first problem because the grammar is a bit confusing as I wrote this at several different times:
When I press the power button on the computer, lights, fans, etc. all start up. Monitor and Keyboard are unresponsive. When I try to turn the monitor on and off again it reads as no display. When I press scroll lock to turn on the keyboard backlight I get nothing. My headphone lights remain off as well though my mouse light remains on even when the computer is completely turned off.

When I press the power button again to turn it off and on again, everything boots up normally - lights inside the case, the monitor, the keyboard, and I face no problems. It happens exactly 1/2 of the time WITHOUT FAIL. The only time it changed was yesterday when I expected it to start normally after restarting the computer. It asked for a boot disk but the keyboard was unresponsive. I restarted the computer and it worked fine.

When I press the shutdown button via the software (through windows start menu) keyboard, monitor, and headphones will turn off (again mouse light will remain on) but fans are still spinning and lights are still on etc. I have to physically turn off the computer before everything turns off (except for the mouse light). I hope that clears some things up. I would edit the original post but it doesn't want to allow me to do that.

Thats the first issue to sort out. Its failing on POST
Hardware fault . Probably motherboard . Try a bios update. Try removing/swapping components & cables untill it powers on properly

"2. Updates installed from MSI's live updates program always fail to install"
uninstall the MSI update app. And any other un-needed apps untill the system is stable
Want updates, go to the website & download/install them manually

"3. I bought two 4 TB harddrives ..."
are they detected in the bios ?
are they detected in disk management in Win ?
have you run seagates test tools on them. Unlikely they are both faulty (it can happen though)
again, check for bios updates for the motherboard

It may be a lemon .
Lots of issues on that motherboard when I google it, lots of bad owner reviews on newegg

If its failing on POST, get it replaced under warranty.

Also , it might be fussy as to the RAM it works with : you'll need to google that. I saw a few mentions to that effect.
Get some RAM its 100% compatable with .

1418958 2016-04-12 01:32:00 Adding to 1101's post. Does sound a bit like a motherboard problem someplace.

Also just looked up the memory you have listed. Its not in the supported list www.msi.com Not listed - CMK32GX4M4B3000C15

Doesn't mean it wont work, that could also mean it hasn't been tested or because yours is a kit it may have a different code.

Just also check that the keyboard is plugged into the Top USB ports next to the PS2 Port. While it should work in the other ports the top two are meant for USB KB/Mouse

1418959 2016-04-12 02:13:00 Work on the startup issues before worrying about the hard drives maybe, but have you partitioned them in Disk management?

The shutdown issues you describe sound more like you are putting it to sleep than actually shutting down, are you sure you are choosing shut down?
Try right clicking the windows start button and choosing shut down from the pop up menu. If it's an issue with sleep that could also be related to your startup issues, if the PC is not sleeping/waking properly it might act the way you mention. The power button for the PC can be configured for shut down or standby. Some hardware configurations do not work well together in standby for whatever reason.

Might be worth resetting the BIOS to defaults and removing your graphics card and all but the boot drive and try it with onboard graphics and the bare minimum of connected devices. See if it behaves any differently. If it does only add things back one at a time so you can see where the issues start.

1418960 2016-04-12 02:42:00 I would start again, unplug all hdds except the one you want to install windows on. Then reconnect them after...

That intel management engine. Check for updates. I'm pretty sure mine came from windowsupdate. I didnt get it from the site

I would also update the BIOS in the BIOS if you can. If BIOS 1.B isnt on it now. It may fix a few things

And check that UEFI AHCI, and secureboot are enabled, if you've got Win 10 x64. Before you install Win 10

Thank you!

I've tried all updates but I'll try to update the bios again and see if maybe there's a new version of the bios.
I'll uninstall all unneeded apps until it's stable.

For the hardrives, no they aren't detected in the BIOs and they don't show up at all anywhere. Not in disk management, not in the BIOs, nothing. They're completely inaccessible.

The RAM I used because it's a pack has a different code (I believe) but I'll try working that out and get back to you guys about it.

I'll check that out, thanks! I'll also try using top two USBs for keyboard and mouse. I think I already have but I'll check that when I get home.

Disk management won't detect them and the BIOs doesn't even read that the SATA ports are occupied. I thought it might be the SATA ports themselves but when I tried using the same SATA ports for my SSDs they worked fine. I thought it might be the cables so I tried the ones that were working with the SSDs but nothing. I bought a Plugable(TM) harddrive to USB to see if I could try and access it through my laptop but nothing on either of them. I definitely think this is a harddrive problem but it seems very unlikely that it would be from two different vendors a month apart which makes me think that maybe I did something wrong to damage them so I wanted to check and see what you guys had to say about that.

As for the Shutdown/Sleep issue, I press shutdown. It's not sleep, it's shut down. What's strange is the Hardrware side, the off button works even the case's power button works. It's just Windows that can't seem to shut it down. I'll try resetting it to defaults after I've updated the BIOs (if there's an update) and see if that fixes anything. I'm crossing my fingers. I bought a motherboard speaker so I can hear if it beeps or makes an audible error sounds though I've got nothing yet.
