1413491 2015-12-28 21:58:00 I'm off to Orstraya for a week and I'm tossing up whether to get a SIM when I get there or stand the roaming costs. I'm not going to be calling NZ. If I use it at all it will be for a few texts and maybe a couple of calls, i.e. very minor use.

Watcha reckon?

Good question. How do I find out? Ask Spark?

1413494 2015-12-28 22:41:00 If your use is going to be as you describe you have no problem with the costs. They are relatively minor. If however you start making some long calls or downloading a lot of data that would definitely be a different matter. CliveM (6007)

If you put another sim in (ie: Vodafone/other) if it doesnt work, it's locked to Spark. If it's locked you could pay them $30 to unlock it

If it's on the Spark site, it may tell you that it's locked to them as well

I suspected that would be the case, which was why I am asking. I certainly won't be downloading any data except via my host's wifi, and if I make a long call it would be an emergency in which case cost is a minor consideration. It is entirely possible that my entire usage will be limited to a (very) few txts.

1413498 2015-12-28 23:45:00 Some folks from Holland have just left the inlaws, they use and suggested https://www.whatsapp.com/

You use it on a wireless connection and its completely free. The lady talks to friends all over the world, both text and actual phone calls, says it hasn't cost her a cent. she showed us by sending a txt to my phone Via whatsapp, and my phone was connected only via 4G.

WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing,
I pay for all my data, so I suspect straight SMS is still going to be cheaper.
