1413511 2015-12-29 21:18:00 Some folks from Holland have just left the inlaws, they use and suggested https://www.whatsapp.com/

You use it on a wireless connection and its completely free. The lady talks to friends all over the world, both text and actual phone calls, says it hasn't cost her a cent. she showed us by sending a txt to my phone Via whatsapp, and my phone was connected only via 4G.

Thanks for that wainui.Wife's off to Europe next year and it looks like this would be great.Guess there're plenty of free wifi spots over there.
But the app would have to be on all her friends phones as well!

1413512 2015-12-29 21:56:00 Correction. You WILL need a data connection if you want to put in a destination on a Windows phone.

Even if you download the maps for wherever and voices, this will only show where you are. NOT where you're going (the destination).

It can't search for the destination without some sort of data connection

Sorry Speedy, that's not true. If I fire up Here Drive on my Lumia 625 it looks for a connection and if it can't find one it asks me if I want to search offline - which works perfectly well. I've it used for travel in NZ without ever having it connected to anything (apart from the USB charger :)) It uses GPS to find the destination, which is not a "data connection" in the sense you are talking about.

Think it didnt work in town because I didnt turn the wifi off. It was probably trying to find mine and I dont live in town here

1413516 2015-12-30 01:59:00 Must of the youngsters use Viber instead of whatsapp, just about everyone I know is on Viber.

Viber also uses either WiFi or data to send texts, make calls etc. One reason they use it is pictures don't get resized when sending as opposed to sending via standard text. I use Viber to text my niece in England costs me nothing compared to sending a normal text at 20C

1413517 2015-12-30 03:39:00 I can't understand how you can't go for a week without your phone!I can't understand how you can go for a week without connection. This is nearly 2016 and ray-guns a flying cars are almost essential, let alone a humble communication device. Greg (193)
