1413501 2015-12-29 00:44:00 I can't understand how you can't go for a week without your phone! What's the matter? Is it surgically implanted?

I feel quite certain that you will not suffer without your phone. After all, it's only a week. You will be surprised how quickly you get over the withdrawal symptoms.

Go on. Give it a try. Go without your phone for a week. You'll find it quite easy.

Looking back at the original Post: Very little use, if at all.

So thats why I suggested the whatsapp. Its free for a year, if you want it longer you pay less than $2 / year -- BIG DEAL. Once back in Kiwi land delete the account and dont use it.

Using your own data ? Well thats going to happen anyway if you get a card for Aussie.

If you dont make any calls or txt's its cost nothing, buying a card for Aussie is going to cost something, which may or may not be used. Hotspots are a dime a dozen in Aussie.

A lot depends on what you are planning to do. If theres mum, dad and the kids all going different ways then being able to stay in contact may be a good idea if required in case someone gets lost, but then that would mean everyone has his /Her own phone and costs.

1413503 2015-12-29 02:59:00 The only reason I am taking the phone is (a) in case of emergency (unlikely) and (b) so I can txt my brother who is meeting me in Sydney in the event that we can't find each other. So there is every possibility that it won't be used at all - as a phone anyway. It does have all my contacts and calendar on it though, which could come in handy, plus various non-phone apps like GPS. Tony (4941)

Nope, regardless of how long you’re going, take a phone and make sure those travelling with you do so also.

I’ve had had plenty of mates visit whilst I’ve been in Aus that have left their phones behind and have spent most of their time lost in airports, malls and just lost. Had we been able to communicate there wouldn’t have been a problem.

Remember NZ fits 29 times into Aus and navigation isn’t that easy until you adapt. ;)

That's fine, travel without one at your own peril. :D

1413508 2015-12-29 09:01:00 But...you may need data for GPS, if searching as will pull up auto suggest searches. Also satellite map (if needed). Also can't really depend on Wifi hotspot...could drop out, or be overloaded, may need to sign in, enter text codes, register, etc.

Though you could prep on phone, google map/navigation directions beforehand on Wifi...

1413509 2015-12-29 09:14:00 Dont know about androids, havent really used the map side of them to find out.

But on Windows phones, you can download maps (for all of NZ , Australia / whatever country), and voices for navigation.

So you dont need the internet, and you wont have to use data to get around

The only thing you'll (probably need) is power. Or something to recharge it. In case it goes flat
