1419074 2016-04-13 15:15:00 Got an older but favorite Kodak (remember them - the camera and film company that said digital was not gonna last?) - printer that has quit printing BLACK .

All the other colors and the sealer work (that's to coat the pictures when you print them) - it's just the BLACK that's quit .

Is there any sorcery that gets them to work again? My good buddy says they are zortched when they quit and no amount of less than divine intervention will work .

I love the picture quality I get/got from it and as the company is out of business - Kodak is gone, phwwt! - I don't have the option of calling Customer Service .

. . . so far - so good :punk

1419075 2016-04-13 20:41:00 If it's the print head then all you can do is replace it - tricky if no parts available.
Find another used one perhaps?

1419076 2016-04-13 21:00:00 PC - what's the odds that it can be soaked in 200 proof alcohol and get it cleaned that way?

It appears to have 4 heads - maybe 5 with the clearcoat head . They all appear to be in a single unit though, not separable .

1419077 2016-04-13 22:36:00 Hi Joe
Geez I tried that long ago, found out it was far cheaper just to replace the printer--sic., Epson cost $49.00 N.Z. and produces a reputable photo even at that price.
I remember taking a printer in to be repaired long long ago and the firm demanded $45 N.Z just to look inside let alone repair- surely there is no debate -- I know I have Scots ancestry but even a Scot could not fault that logic ;-)

1419078 2016-04-13 23:03:00 Some printers can perform tests to show what nozzles of the print head could be blocked .

Usually I run the printer into a clean mode, when I hear the print head move, I pull the plug . When the print head is out of home position, it can be moved by hand easily .

Now any solution that can soften ink and not destroy plastic would be good . On the far left, is usually a sponge/pad, soak it with the solution, place print head over it, let it rest a long time . Then make sure to put the print head back to the far right .

Run it through a couple of cleans, then test . If still issues, then I would get a paper towel, fold it a few times, put warm/hot water in the centre of it and move the print head over it, back and forth a few times .

We are manually wiping the ink from the nozzles and hoping its enough to loosen dry ink . Run cleaning mode after you are happy and test . If this has failed, might be new printer time .

Cheers,

KK

1419079 2016-04-13 23:35:00 Some print heads are a mission to get out, needing the printer to be stripped.

Ive done that once, it didnt fix the issue . So it was time wasted & $ spend on new print heads wasted .

I only attempted it as our boss at the time thought we were lazy writing off cheap printers or sending some printers & laptops out to specialists
when we didnt have the parts, tools or expertise to some repairs in house.
So It gave the old , 'we can fix anything' attempt just to shut him up.
:)

If the heads are the simple unclip types, plenty of options to attempt a clean.
Soak in warm distilled water (distilled will be a better solvent than tap water) ,maybee acetone, isopropyl etc. you may melt the thing with the wrong solvent though

1419080 2016-04-14 00:37:00 The Kodak heads are very easy to get out - even to look directly at from both sides .

The ink cartridge side is mostly some sort or polyester plastic for strength, and the head side appears to be a polyurethane type plastic . Solvent choices are really limited: acetone, lacquer thinner, DMSO, toluene, gasoline - all may not work .

In the olden days when I had cartridge refilling kits, the cleaner/solvent was always isopropyl alcohol, so a good drinkable alcohol should work - right?

"Everclear" comes to mind . 7102

If it doesn't work, at least I'll have a tinted 100 proof drinkable alcohol .

1419081 2016-04-14 02:19:00 Give it a go - why not. If it doesn't work, oh well, but you never know your luck pctek (84)
1419082 2016-04-14 02:38:00 That's what I needed - a little boost. Tnx. SurferJoe46 (51)
