1418603 2016-04-03 23:03:00 Youse guys know me - I love my music!

All of a sudden - like between radio station changes (from Pandora to SurfGuitar101) the sound went away .

I went over to the (dark) Windows XP-P side, and the sound works there just great .

I've soft-switched to different cards (I've got two plus the OEM cards installed), and I've switched between them all, re-booting each time . . . but nothing good comes of it .

Any ideas? Or has Puppy gone silent for good? I click the TEST button, and used to hear a small dog bark - but not any more .

For the record: I SHUT DOWN and REBOOTED Puppy quite a few times now, figuring that a re-boot was not sufficient for the changes to take effect . .

1418604 2016-04-03 23:36:00 Do you get sound if you boot from the Puppy CD?
If so, reinstall it in the Frugal mode.
What version of Puppy are you using?

1418605 2016-04-04 00:03:00 I used the USB version and got it installed here.

I'll try - but does Linux have a REPAIR MODE?

1418606 2016-04-04 02:10:00 Joe, have you tried looking at the generic sound mixer under the multimedia section of the menu?
It launches Alsamixer.

Otherwise the forum below is the place to go.

1418607 2016-04-04 02:30:00 Dave - that's what confuses me. I don't understand if those are drivers or apps to the driver.

Problem is is that I see a lot of stuff in there, but what they are is difficult to decode since Linux-Talk is almost as bad as Kiwi-Talk.

I'll check out that forum.

BTW: I tried to use the USB installer I got for Puppy in the first place, but Puppy threw a hissy and said that since that USB installation was older, the new version would stay put. All-in-all, I'm still impressed with Puppy. I thought I'd not allow the memory of the last run was a good idea, but that took me to where I didn't want to go.

I figgered at that point that I had mucked up the install and all my files and bookmarks and stuff were sdwcrewed, but the next reboot was all OK again - with the exception of the sound card drivers.

Going to website now - thanks......

1418608 2016-04-04 03:00:00 OK - I'm in ALSAMIXER and at the F2 prompt .

Out comes a window

/proc/asound/cards

that tells me to select a file

Then I can see

0 [Live ] EMU10K1 - SB! LIVE Value [CT4780]

1 [pcsp ]:PC-Speaker - pcsp Internal PC-Speaker at port 0x61

I know which one to select - The SB! Live thing . . . . . but how do I select it?

The cursor moves nothing, I cannot type a 0 or a 1, so it all ends there - right?

1418610 2016-04-05 02:02:00 Help.

I've been fighting this for another 24 hours or so - still no sound in Puppy although the same sound cards all run in XP.

I took out all but one of them, the OEM sound card is still in place. It's a motherboard device, and all I can do is remove the driver --- but which one is it? I want to run my SB Live! unit.

Can I just delete - if that's even possible - all the sound stuff from Puppy and reinstall them again? It all worked before when I first installed Puppy - so I imagine it would work again.

1418611 2016-04-05 03:51:00 Hi Joe
you could try systematically going through all the steps in the following.
puppylinux.org

Or you could reinstall puppy and hope that fixes it and it doesn't happen again.

I have used Puppy as a secondary OS for years but recently stopped that and use Linux Mint as my primary and windows as rarely as I can.
I don't have much knowledge about multiple sound cards though.
So I still think the Puppy forum will be more likely to yield you meaningful help.

Or you could try installing Ubuntu Studio or one of the others in my earlier posts to you.

Is there a Linux Users Group in your part of the states?

I surely don't know of any Linux Clubs in Montana . We have 50% fewer people in the whole state than there are in San Bernardino County, CA . ( . google . com/search?q=population+of+san+bernardino+county%2C+ca" target="_blank">www . google . com lifornia&oq=population+of+san+bernardino+county%2C+californ ia&gs_l=serp . 3 . . 0i30 . 10053 . 13172 . 0 . 14227 . 14 . 14 . 0 . 0 . 0 . 0 . 165 . 1534 . 5j8 . 13 . 0 . . . . 0 . . . 1 . 1 . 64 . serp . . 1 . 13 . 1526 . OxxxGUvYjt4), I think .

I'm going to uninstall all the sound cards and reboot . That might cure it . Otherwise I may move over to Lubuntu, which looks interesting too .

I've been busy though with downloading Mint 17 . 3, Zorin 11 . 0, Lubuntu 15 . 0, Kubuntu 15 . 0 (which I tried a dozen years ago - disastrously I might add) .

Going to that Puppy Forum got me zero answers, I was just ignored .

I'll try to remove the final SB Live! card and reboot, and then reinstall it again and see what I get .

I know I'm nowhere near up to speed to run any line-entry distro, so this has to be idiot proof for me . However, that being said: I've enjoyed (up to this point anyway) the time I've spent with Puppy .

The confusion I find is not knowing if these audio-parts are drivers or just graphic equalizers or whatever . I recognize that Retroval is a mixer of some sort, but it is 'way too complicated to even understand .
