1418517 2016-04-02 11:45:00 Hi everyone,

A week ago I upgraded my phone (had a good recontract offer), I have the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
I am having problems with it being recognised by my PC, which is a Win 10 64 bit machine. I want to be able to do this to copy my photos from phone to PC (I know there are wifi solutions for this instead but they are not as easy or fast)

When I connected it the first time, it appeared to install drivers automatically - I got the driver installation progress window, which closes by itself after a minute or two with no errors. However when I connect my phone via USB to my PC, I have the following occur:
- Phone seems to be somewhat recognised by the PC, because if I right-click 'Safely remove hardware', the phone appears as 'Samsung_Android'
- When I go to the file explorer on the PC, I cannot browse the folders on the phone (which I should be able to do)
- When I look in Device Manager, I can see (under 'portable devices' heading) two listings, both with yellow exclamation marks: "SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device", and "WPD FileSystem Volume Driver" AND I can also see under the heading 'SAMSUNG Android Phone' a listing with the name 'SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface'
- When I connect the phone, I choose the option on my phone to 'Use USB for transferring media files' which uses a MTP connection. (The other three options are transferring images (PTP); connecting MIDI devices, or charging via USB)
- I am using the original cable

I have read about some possible causes and solutions on various forums, but none have worked for me so far. This is what I have tried so far:
- Tried the phone on my laptop instead, it works fine there, which is also a Win 10 64bit machine. So I am pretty sure this is a Windows/driver or a USB port issue, not a phone or cable issue.
- Have tried using different USB ports, the same happens each time
- Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, the same problem keeps happening (I have tried uninstalling using a nifty utility I have called 'DeviceCleanup') - but when I connect the phone again, it just seems to reinstall the drivers like it did first time but the same problem remains)
- Have tried removing the device from Device Manager and adding it again, nothing changes. Also tried updating the drivers directly from device Manager (right-click and update driver) but it said I already have the most up to date driver.
- Have tried installing the Samsung 'SmartSwitch' software, but it fails to recognise the device. I have tried the 'reinstall device driver' option from this software but nothing changes
- Have tried changing the connection method (via phone) to PTP but it's still not recognised
- Have tried enabling developer options on the phone and turning on USB debugging, as some forums have suggested, but it makes no difference
- Have tried connecting phone with my AV disabled in case that was somehow blocking the device, but it made no difference
- Have tried deleting the devices files/cache for External Storgae and Media storage and letting the device rebuild the databases (again as suggested by some forums) but still no difference

I should also add, I had the same problem with my last phone on this PC too. It worked fine on my old PC, but not on this new PC, which I got late last year. I didn't worry at that time as I thought it was drivers for that old phone not availabel for Win 10. I knew I was getting a new phone soon so I thought with the new phone and drivers, it would work. But of course it still didn't.

I've run out of ideas. Any suggestions??

1418519 2016-04-21 21:21:00 on my Nexus phone (running marshmallow), once I've connected it to my pc/laptop i have to swipe down, touch the "USB for charging" and choose File Transfers from the list. Then the phone is available as a drive in Explorer. autechre (266)
1418520 2016-04-22 00:20:00 +1. I had same trouble/solution with Marshmallow on an older tablet. linw (53)
1418521 2016-04-22 09:58:00 Thanks for the suggestions guys, but as you will see in my original post I have already done that. After selected it, the first option is "Transferring media files", but that does not work. Have also tried the other three options (transferring images; connecting MIDI devices; and charging) but nothing changes Chikara (5139)
1418522 2016-04-22 10:52:00 If you dbl click on the entries in device manager, does it show an error 10 or something else?

If it is error 10 there maybe something in the registry under upperfilter/lowerfilters blocking it.

1418523 2016-04-22 11:13:00 Hi SPeedy,

The entry in device manager with the error (yellow ! ) is the "SAMSUNG Mobile MTP device", under portable devices.
The error is:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I don't currently have a listing under portable devices for "WPD FileSystem Volume Driver", like I did when I first posted this. I think this is because I have tried removing some device drivers since I originally posted, which may have removed that WPD error.

It does seem maybe to be a registry problem though. just a different error code to your thought. I have run a CCleaner scan to check for registry issues, I fix all problems found but the problem remains (and none of the found problems seemed to be driver-related anyway)...

1418524 2016-04-22 11:24:00 I wouldnt use ccleaner's reg cleaner. If you delete the wrong things it can screw things up.Is Itunes installed? I could have a quick look with teamviewer if you want.

It maybe a upper/lowerfilter prob

1418525 2016-04-22 11:30:00 I've never installed iTunes on this machine, no.
Not quit sure what you mean my upper/lower filter problem?
I am happy for you to have a look via TeamViewer, if you have the time - that would be very helpful thanks! From what I have read on various forums it seems others have had this problem too but I have not yet found any solution.
What do you need from me for the TeamViewer session? I already have TV installed, often use it myself to help out my parents when they have problems, great software
