2015-12-28 10:06:00 | Don't piss with people in Wainui to much. Some people over here take matters into their own hands. Even on the day it went up many were questioning / asking others jokingly how long before something happened to it. ( most gave it less than a week) cut-off-and-shot-twice-is-this-the-countrys-most-hated-new-speed-camera (www.stuff.co.nz) Don't know what a speed camera costs, but I bet its more than it gathers in revenue. Why Revenue ? 3 speed camera's within 3 KM's --- SIMPLE as one of the MP's state: the accidents on the hill tended to occur on bends where there were no cameras, particularly on the Wainuiomata side. "In my view the placement's just stupid." And guess what, they wont put one on the corners as most slow down to BELOW the 80KM Speed limit. Its gotta be costing them a lot, when they have to put in a second cam to monitor the first.

2015-12-28 20:52:00 | So....because they haven't slowed down there as there is no camera? They dont put cameras where the accidents are because they would never catch anyone. The Accidents are mostly on the rather tight /sharp corners. The speed limit on the hill is 80KM, On the wainuiomata side the majority of people go around the corners at less than that because they are to dangerous at 80, the general exception are the hoons and boy racers who think they can drive at any speed. Years ago there used to be many head on crashes as some went round the corners to fast and drifted into incoming traffic. The solution was they put up a barrier from one side of the hill to the other - since then not one single head on crash. BUT who ever repairs the roads are just as bad, they put down new seal that when it gets a bit damp/wet is like a ice rink. and no surprise on the tighter corners, so they are making it dangerous. The speed cam at the top of the hill is placed for revenue gathering mainly. Most of the accidents in that area is again because of poor design, people get hit by cars when they try to cross the road where they are not meant to, OR try to do U turns again where they are not allowed to. Saw it just a few weeks ago, Some idiot decided instead of going to the bottom of the hill and turning around they did a U turn near the top, some truck was coming over the hill, he had to jump on the brakes other wise he would have hit the car, wasn't the truck drivers fault, at a guess I'd say the truck would have been lucky to be doing 50K in an 80K area. There used to be one of those speed signs that told you how fast you were going, the majority of people coming off the hill in a 80KM area would slow down to 50, but they removed that sign because to many people were slowing down before the cam area. One place there is still accidents, AGAIN POOR DESIGN is right at the bottom of the hill, theres a street, and theres a bit of a blind sopt, you sometimes cant see any traffic coming so sometimes its pot luck if you can get out or not, and this is in a 50K area. The excuse they are using is total rubbish: In the decade before it was installed, there were 168 speed-related crashes on Wainuiomata Rd, including one fatal crash and 53 injury crashes, seven of them serious. What they dont tell you is that since the barrier was installed, the crash rate had dropped hugely. Nothing to do with a speed cam. So in ten years, 221 crashes, yet this Xmas theres been more than that in a few days over the country, and at a guess I would say most were at lower than the speed limit -------- Hmmmmmm

2015-12-28 21:23:00 | There's no doubt it is merely revenue gathering. There is also no doubt that they'll never admit it. NZ Police are a branch of the present fascist junta.

2015-12-28 21:56:00 | Whats more of a problem is people talking on cell phones. The cops say they cant be everywhere, OK fair enough, BUT when we went to Foxon the other day, between there and back we saw roughly a dozen people yacking away. They dont really do anything about it -- Not like places overseas. Just yesterday when going to the airport, we got passed by someone talking on the phone (we were doing 100K in a line of traffic) , when we pulled up beside him at the lights ( still talking) SWMBO held her phone (in passengers seat) and aimed it at the guy-- you should have seen the look on his face --smile:eek:

2015-12-29 03:13:00 | Of course there has been lots of crashes. How can one concentrate on the road and the speedo at the same time. Ken :( I don't want to rain on your parade kenj, and maybe you were just joking, but if a driver can't assess their vehicle speed without gluing their eyes to the speedo then perhaps they shouldn't be driving, They get plenty of aural and visual clues! I have no trouble assessing 50km/hr and likewise 80 or 100. I drove down-country yesterday on SH1 through multiple road works, but if you slow when you see the signs, and before you reach the posted restriction, you can't go wrong. Much later I was returning North to Auckland after dropping our daughter off in Hamilton and visiting rellies, and traffic going south yesterday was nose to tail for at least 30 Km but I saw no dangerous overtaking. As for somebody who thinks that the speed tolerance is 8-10km/hr, that person should pay attention to all of the publicity the Police put out before holiday weekends and other notorious high crash-rate periods. If he/she doesn't, they shouldn't be on the road. Mrs T tells me I'm crawling, but in reality I am just another vehicle in the main traffic traffic stream and the only person I am 'holding up' is the possibly the hoon who wants to overtake on a blind bend and run me off the road while squeezing in by the skin of his teeth before he finds himself under the front of an 18 wheeler. I always let them get past at the earliest opportunity so that I don't end up as part of their accident. I've been cleand up big time once by an open-road driver crossing the centerline and I never want to experience that again, several decades later the effects are still with me. Cheers BIlly 8-{)

2015-12-29 03:26:00 | Well we just about got taken out on the damn hill. Some silly b1tch on her phone txting, all over the road not looking where shes going. Thank god SWMBO's car has got some good brakes, Jumped on all fours. We were in the outside lane and this stupid cow drifted across two lanes right in front of us. Then when she realized, looks and smiles and you could see her mouthing sorry. Wont tell you what SWMBO yelled at her, it wasn't to polite :eek::eek:

2015-12-29 03:55:00 | I was only joking as far as I am concerned Billy, but SWBBO drives with her eyes glued on the screen. Apart from personal driving, I do around 20,000 a year in the school van and I know by the engine noise how fast is 60K which is 52K as the darn thing is 8K out and has been for the last few years. Only had 2 speeding tickets in 58 years of driving. :) Ken

2015-12-29 05:13:00 | Only had 2 speeding tickets in 58 years of driving. :) Ken Your one and up one kenj. Only had one in over 60yr driving and got off it because the cop lied to the Judge. :banana Still laugh about it as the cop did me for 92mph but I was probably only doing about 75mph at the time. (yes I had a real quick car) So off to Court we went. Anyway, with the help of “Larry Reids Rally Tables” I convinced the Judge that there was no way the Cops MK1 Zephyr could accelerate from standing to where I was stopped to catch a car doing 92mph. Old Judge Tuckwell’s summing-up was brilliant because he would throw out any case where he thought the Cop lied to him. It went like this: On this occasion Mr M....... I must find you not Guilty, but don’t you ever do it again. :annoyed: I’m damn glad I grew up in the era I did. :clap Oh, I'd spent most of the day in the pub and was going to work which was why I stopped.
