587781 2007-09-04 04:01:00 I’ve got an old HP Pavilion 4409 here that I’m trying to help a young fellow get going.

It’s a bitza and we’ve got it going so well it won’t shut down! :D

Yep, windows closes fine and it just sits there with the HDD light glowing full time and the Power light flashing. PSU Fan and CPU fan still run as normal and monitor blank.

Anybody any suggestions as to what’s wrong.

587782 2007-09-04 04:08:00 check power management in bios and what operating system you runnin ? drcspy (146)
587783 2007-09-04 04:32:00 Ok, the Power Button Behaviour in the CMOS is set to On/Off. The explanation says that the computer should shut down if the Power Button is held down for 4 Seconds.

Holding down the Power Button for 10 Seconds even at this stage fails to close down the system but a second press will start Windows again.

I even tried resetting the BIOS to it’s default settings but no luck.

The power On/Off button simply doesn’t function correctly whether the OS is loaded or not.

The OS is ME, but I doubt we can blame it for this. :D

587784 2007-09-04 08:18:00 Have a look at This (www.aumha.org), there are several solutions to ME not shutting down, as well as a "Shut Down Patch " for ME ( about half way down the page) wainuitech (129)
587785 2007-09-04 09:16:00 That's a real interesting site Winuitech which I've bookmarked and will check it out more thoroughly tomorrow .

However, this machine won't shut down (Power Off) from the CMOS setup screen .

My thinking is that if the power switch won't power off from the CMOS screen or a 98 Boot disk it can't be the OS .

As always, I stand to be corrected on this . :)

587786 2007-09-04 10:08:00 Could be the PSU maybe ?

I got a old 4404 & a 4403 in the "gotta keep for one day for parts " pile if you need any parts .

As far as I remember the PSU and AMD boards still work .

The 4404 Had a HUGE 3 . 2 Gb HD LOL

587787 2007-09-05 03:26:00 Well, I figure the problem was either the Power supply or the Motherboard and seeing they were both mongrel models, I assigned them both to the Green Bin. :D

Back to square one.

Thanks everyone.
