587157 2007-09-02 22:44:00 I have a customer who does sign design. He keeps all design files & backs them up to cd's. When he has to refer back to the design he has to flip through numerous cd's to get the files, sometimes choosing the wrong cd. The total amount of files possibly exceeds 150+ Gb.
Can anyone recommend a better & simple storage method so that he is able to access the necessary files quickly.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

587158 2007-09-02 23:02:00 Get an external HHD, maybe a 320GB or 400GB. They are pretty cheap now days. Or just add the new HHD as a slave to his current pc and use it as a storage. ronyville (10611)

I agree a NAS or removable hard drive is the best option. Are the CD's kept on premise? Has he considered that if the building burnt down he'd lose all his work? Maybe he should also consider some form of off site backup for the most crucial work?

Cheers

587162 2007-09-03 01:01:00 um........harddrives CAN fail........best to keep another backup on cd/dvd media drcspy (146)
587163 2007-09-03 01:07:00  Was waiting for that to come up. A dvd can get scratched or lost too. I'd recommend setting up some description of RAID (probably RAID1), so everything is always backed up, and if one fails, you've got the other one. wratterus (105)

587165 2007-09-03 04:28:00 The problem appears to be getting very fast access to the content on all his CDs. Whether he stores his files on CD, DVD or hard-drives, the problem remains the same - hitting the right CD first time.

I've used a CD/DVD/HD librarian for years that is lightning fast and aesy to use. It's called ADC: Advanced Disk Catalog, and is made by www.elcomsoft.com. One of the best investments I've made.

would have been my suggestion. It sounds like just lack of good house keeping, lots of catalogue programs about.
