587951 2007-09-04 22:52:00 Is there a simple to understand way of forwarding ports so that UTorrent may be used with a reasonable speed please?
I have Windows XP SP2
Xtra explorer broadband
D-Link DSL-504G Router and wish to use just one of two computers on a lan for Torrents.
I have checked on the net and the directions there have all been way above my understanding.
All that I have learnt so far is that I do need to port forward as utorrent has a yellow triangle icon where there should be a green tick icon.
Any help would be appreciated here thanks :help:

587952 2007-09-04 23:17:00 Go to the router control panel in Internet explorer, (in the address bar type the routers address eg: 10.1.1.1 or 192.168.1.1)
Click the 'Advanced User Mode' button on the left
Click the 'Advanced button' at the top
Then the 'Port Forwarding' button on the side

In the Private IP: enter the IP address of your computer
If you are unsure of your IP address the you probably have a you IP assigned to you, follow these procedures
Open the start menu
Click Settings -> control panel
Click on Network and Internet Settings
Open Network connections
Look for a connection (probably called Local Area Connection) that says Connected
Double click on that connection
Click the 'Properties' Button
Scroll down to 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP', Then double click on it
Tick the 'Use the following IP address' radio button
Assign yourself an IP address Like the one for your Router, if the router was 10.1.1.1 then make yours 10.1.1.21. Like wise if the router is 192.168.1.1 make yours 192.168.1.21
Click in the 'subnet' field (should be filled automatically)
In the 'default gateway' put the IP address of your router
In the 'Preferred DNS server' also put the IP address of your router
Click OK, then OK again
Go back to the routers control panel
Enter the IP address you just assigned to your computer into the Private IP box

In the 'Protocol Type' list select TCP or UDP (different applications use differend protocols) if you are unsure create two port forwards, one on each protocol.
In the 'Private Port' enter a port number ie: 26000 (to be safe stick with high numbers in this field, the lower numbers get used by other programs/services)
In the 'Public Port' enter the same port number and select 'Single port' from the list at the end
Click 'Apply'

You can go through the steps again to create another port forward (for another protocol maybe)

Also found this (www.geekzone.co.nz)that you may want to use if the above doesn't work.
