588878 2007-09-07 13:02:00 i am having a little trouble with my machine. its running a little slow with an error message " low disk space" . I don't want to delete programes on C as it might do some real damage. What programme can i delete off C drive to free up some space?. System restore is also not functioning due low disk space.

588879 2007-09-07 13:17:00 First of all, get CCleaner and then see how much un-needed stuff you can get off your HDD . You could also clear all but the most recent restore point created by your system .

Furthermore, you could increase your virtual memory if that seems to be the problem . Try seeing if there are any problems that are really unneeded or have better alternatives such as Foxit Reader replacing Acrobat, Avast AV replacing Norton etc .

Let me know if you need any more help:)

588880 2007-09-07 13:32:00 Go to your Control Panel and look for "Add or Remove Programs" click on that go through your "Add or Remove Programs" list & see if there are any Programs listed there that you no longer use.

If you’re not sure about uninstalling a Program post back here & we will tell you if you can safely uninstall it.

Also if you go to start > all Programs > Accessories > System Tools & look for “Disk Cleanup” & run it you should be able to free up some/ a lot of space.

If your not too sure about anything post back here :)

You may also want to have a look at these FAQ's: faqf1.net.nz & faqf1.net.nz

Good luck & let us know how you get on :)

588883 2007-09-07 14:23:00 Wow, i manage to free up 233MB which helps move things a little faster than normal. malo (12639)
588884 2007-09-07 14:27:00 Still can't use defragmentor or system restore due to space availability. please help, cheers. malo (12639)
588885 2007-09-07 15:51:00 Well if it was me personally, I would get rid of iTunes, winamp and quick time and just use VLC player but you might need iTunes for your iPod if you have one.

BTW, did you get rid of all but the latest restore points? Right click on your C Drive, Properties, Disk Cleanup, wait till it calculates and then "More" on the top AND run CCleaner??? If you haven't run it ever before, you'll probably get 100-200MB more.

So run both the disk cleanup utility and delete the restore points.

Ummmmmm lets see . . . . . . get a bigger hard drive!!!!!

Install the new drive, clone or ghost the old drive to the new one, set the new drive as the primary and hey presto no more space problems .

Hard drives are so cheap surely you should be able to get at the very least a 120+GB drive, heck I paid $88+gst for my 250GB Seagate not so long ago .

I would also check the Windows "Temp" drirectory as well as the "Temp" diretcory under "%username%\Local Settings\Temp" blah blah blah . If you use a lot of rar files they are usually found here after extraction even if you have set the extract path somewhere else .

Please forgive my apparent sarcasm/wit but removing programs to reclaim (significant space) though logical won't always give you the desired result . You've now freed up 233MB of space and still have the same problem, whereas fitting a new drive would have been painless not to mention solve the problem in a matter of minutes .

I'm actually quite surprised no-one suggest a new hard drive .

cheers
