588651 2007-09-06 13:09:00 At some point in the last few weeks Windows Media Player on my laptop no longer wants to play DVD's correctly :(

When I try & play a DVD all I get is a black screen, I can get sound fine, & when I play *.mpg movies, they play fine, it’s just when I play DVD's I can’t see any thing.

I am running Windows Media Player 9.000.00.3354

I would upgrade to the lasted version of Windows Media Player, but SurferJoe has put me off with the comments that the newer version of Windows Media Player has more DRM & that it has more blot.

Any ideas?

PS: I was thinking of doing a repair of Windows Media Player, but I don’t know where I can find the setup fine for the same version of Windows Media Player that I am using, Any ideas?

Thanks :)

588652 2007-09-06 14:15:00 Three things:

1) WMP11 is absolutely fantastic and has no extra DRM settings that I can see. I play DVD's through it all the time (proper ones and erm..backed up ones too). Why don't you just try it and see it for yourself. If you don't like it, you can always roll it back.

2) If you do want an old copy of the setup, this site: http://www.oldversion.com/ will definitely help you out.

3) If all else fails, get VLC Player.

I would seriously recommend that you DO upgrade to WMP 11 as most people are fine with it and you shouldn't let one bad call cloud your judgment.

588653 2007-09-06 17:57:00 I am not the only person with a case of the jaws for WMP11 . . it is hitting the internet and chatrooms and techblogs all over the place about DRMs and other rights management problems .

Go for yourself and type in: "WMP11+problems" into Google and see what the rest of the world is saying .

If you have kept all your updates . . er . . . updated, you may have NO OPTION but to goto WMP11 . . as the instruction for eliminating all earlier versions are in one of the hotfixes of critical updates from Mr . Bill .

Just that alone is reason why to not get v11 . If it's being forced into systems world-wide . . that rings MY bell!

I have personally seen people here in my neighborhood and on my personal network complain about new denials of services and black screens and all that from a broad spectrum of users . To a person, they all regret getting the upgrade to v11 .

People with vast vidlibraries and audio files (like me) will not use v11 at all .

Those who just want to see Uncle Charlie's hernia scars in a home video are being denied the opportunity to view the file in v11 .

Reason: unlicensed or non-permitted files are denied by code written in WMP11 . Home vids are not licensed or digitally signed either . WMP11 views them as bootlegged and actually saves a packet of info to send to M$ when you get online . It's automatic and it isn't blockable without corrupting your system and raising a red flag in M$/MPAA/RIAA Headquarters .

If you actually get v11 and you have unsigned or undocumented or un-licensed (permitted) files that USED TO PLAY in previous versions of WMP . . they will not be playable on earlier versions of WMP if you should be able to get back to it someday .

In essence, if you get v11 . . the old files will no longer be viewable with older versions . . even on other computers with older WMP versions either!

I, although believing beeswax34 perfectly, cannot condone this new invasion of WMP11 to be used by anyone . . even if there is some anecdotal evidence that it works well for some people .

Take your best shot and do what you want . . but you cannot return to WMP10,9, or earlier versions once v11 is installed without fdisk and reinstall XP .

BTW: You cannot roll back to earlier versions . . you can DOWNLOAD them, but you will be denied installing it .

588654 2007-09-06 19:37:00 IF you decide to install Windows Media 11 then make a backup image of your partition first.

Rolling back to a previous version of Windows Media Player 11 is a feature of the Windows operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, in Windows XP, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was previously on your computer.

WMP11 also uses WGA check so make sure your installing it on a Legal WinXP or it will not install.

Version 9 and 10 are on http://www.oldversion.com/ as Beeswax said. 10 seems ok.

As SurferJoe says there is plenty of evidence of many people having problems with it.

588655 2007-09-06 22:59:00 I'd upgrade to 10 but NOT 11. I hate it. and it also screws my DVDs up too:

DVD Stuffup (www.imagef1.net.nz)

Even when using the fully compatible (according to DECCHECK) powerdvd codec.

PS: if anyone could help with above DVD problem... :D

588656 2007-09-06 23:10:00 Use a REAL program for DVD's.

Powerdvd, DVD x player (not free forever tho, but plays any DVD, any zone), or VLC.

Just because WMP is already installed, it doesnt mean its the best program to use for anything or everything.

You wont / dont have to worry about DRM, if whatever you're trying to play isnt protected.

Just dont play anything that you've downloaded thats protected, then WMP wont complain.

Easy as that.

588657 2007-09-06 23:14:00 PowerDVD and Nero Showtime work fine Agent_24 (57)
588658 2007-09-07 00:02:00 I also use Power DVD for all my videos . . but some naturally migrate to WMP10 by accident . . . . these are ones that I let get away from me and I know better . . but v10 doesn't seem to mind . . again I say "YET" .

I do not save any ripped dvd's in WMP . . I only use Power DVD to show them . Remember that it's still legal to do that here in the US . . and conditions and laws may differ in your place of residence .

I use WMP10 for all my audio files though . . and they run just fine from it .

I suppose I could goto a different MP3 player . . but so far I've not had troubles with the Windows version . . . that's SO FAR anyway!

As yet, I shy away from Nero . . it is pretty fantastic . . but I feel insecure with it at the moment .

I normally use Acer Arcade to play DVD movies .

I have PowerDVD installed, but the movie I am trying to play won’t let me get past/ use the DVD menu when I use PowerDVD .

Thanks for all the reply’s :), I will have a look at oldversion . com & see if that helps

I will get back to you all & let you know how I get on .

588660 2007-09-07 00:40:00 11 is useless. The library is dis-functional, it does horrible things with DRM, and its just plain evil. 10 all the way.

I use WMP10 with k-lite codex installed, havn't yet found a media file I can't play with it. (apart from .flv ).
