588127 2007-09-05 04:12:00 I am on the lookout for a new LCD monitor. My current one is about 5 years old, and is good, but is a bit small as it is a 18 inch Philips 180p brilliance LCD and is 1280x1024. I am wanting a something that is at least 22 inch and preferably a wide screen one, and my budget was around $600. My current one actually has about the best colour reproduction and viewing angles I have ever seen on an LCD monitor and their is no backlight bleeding. But it was very expensive when I purchased it 5 years ago . The main thing I am looking for is excellent colours, as I am using it for graphics and photos. I have read that I should be looking for a S-IPS panel with 16.7 million colours (not 16.2 million), but manufacturers don't tend to specify the type of panel it is.

I was looking at the Samsung 226BW, but have found out that the ones that are imported into NZ use a 'C' code panel, and these are actually made in china by Chi Mei. These supposdly produce a grey with a very blue tinge to it. This didn't impress me, as I expected that a samsung lcd monitor should be made by samsung, and not contracted out to a cheap supplier, as samsung do manufacturer the LCD panels for themselves as well as other companies.
I am also looking at the dell 24 inch one which looks to be a professional level of monitor (and not one of the el cheaps that they also sell), but it is a bit outside my budget, and I am not sure who manufacturers the LCD panel in it. Anyone recommend a good LCD monitor that is good for graphic work?

588128 2007-09-05 04:13:00 Viewsonic or samsung. They both make a very nice 22" widescreen monitor. wratterus (105)

Yes I saw that thread, but it looked like people had been recommending monitors for gaming and videos, such as the samsungs(Chi Mei) and Viewsonic (who use all sorts of manufacturers), rather than those best for graphic work. What I am looking for is a more professional LCD monitor.

I had heard that philips/lg supply apple iMac LCD panels which are made for graphic work, however the current philips models sold in NZ don't appear to be the same type or quality of panel that are used in the iMac.

588131 2007-09-05 04:50:00 You can actually use a 20" Apple monitor on a PC although I gather some of the screen adjustment features are are a bit limited on a PC. The only other issue with a 20" Apple monitor would be the price as they are not the cheapest on the market when compared to other 20" LCD monitors.
Apple usually has very specific deals with 3rd party hardware component suppliers involving exclusivity and confidentiality would forbid companies like Phillips from supplying hardware they use for Apple to other customers.

I would say the same for budget reasons, otherwise Apple monitors are the industry standard for colour accuracy in design work and colour correction, there are a number of other LCD monitors that are just as good for a lesser price though.

588135 2007-09-05 09:53:00 I am using a Philips LCD and am extremely happy with it.
I have several other friends also using phillips and they are also really nice LCD's.
Philips is my recommendation.

588136 2007-09-05 19:43:00 I use a 22" Philips Widescreen but colours are not perfect for high end graphics.

Apple has always been a favourite for Graphic Designers Graphic Artists etc, I have no doubt they would be a bit more expensive but no doubt do a good job. Go take a look at an Apple dealer and see before you buy. Likes of Harvey Norman has a few brands of Monitor on Display do some instore recon.
