588640 2007-09-10 08:53:00 There's nothing connected to the line except for the Fax, Phone and DSL Modem.

The disconnections can happen anytime, using the phones doesn't seem to affect it

The router (D-Link DSL-502T) can do up to ADSL2+ (24Mbit down) so I don't think it's going too fast.

Maybe it's the line that can't handle?

Sky Digital? Many people forget that the phone line needs to be filtered at the decoder as well.

Call your ISP and get them to log a fault with Telecom, they can make configuration changes and reset ports etc that can fix these type of problems.

588642 2007-09-13 19:48:00 best thing to do is throw away plug-in filters and get a decent one installed in the ETP with a dedicated ADSL jackpoint.

It's not as flexible, but far less prone to causing problems.

I have similar problems to the thread starter

Sorry, but what is an ETP ?

And what is a dedicated ADSL jackpoint ? Does a technician need to install one of these or do you just mean that nothing else gets plugged into a normal phone jack ?

588643 2007-09-13 20:02:00 I have no trouble what so ever. I get rates of 600-700KB/s download and man can it chew up the 20GB monthly limit fast. Much depends on time of day and what you are connecting to as I have seen speeds of <80KB/s as well trying to download some files off some sites. Big John (551)

An ETP is the External Terminating Point, usually the demarcation between what's Telecom's and your wiring.

If a splitter is installed in the ETP a pair of wires or a separate cable has to be used to a jack specifically for the ADSL modem because all the others will be filtered.

588645 2007-09-14 22:02:00 Exactly what Paul said.

A filter in the ETP is often referred to as a splitter, and yes usually this would be done by a Technician.

It may require a little bit of re-wiring and an additional jackpoint depending on your current setup, but the normal telecom cable in use these days has an extra pair of wires in it so it's often not necesary to run any new cables

588646 2007-09-17 06:51:00 The problem is I don't want the line to my room dedicated to ADSL only, I want phone as well.

I've tried a borrowed Dynalink RTA-230 which has this (www.imagef1.net.nz), currently in ADSL line status. (this is after 7 hr connection time)

Quite a few errors, I thought.

So if the attainable line rate is the highest you I get without noticeable problems, maybe my line cannot handle 3mbit that the D-Link can achieve?

Is there a way for me to find out if this is the wiring in my house, or the actual outside lines? (preferably without involving telecom and their charging of lots of money)

588647 2007-09-18 01:20:00 I'm using a 6-year-old Dynalink filter at the ETP and can download at 6.2 Mb/s (connect rate's slightly higher). Although this may not help in your particular case, I can definitely say that the old Dynalink filters were fast and reliable :) Nermal (7077)
588648 2007-09-18 05:58:00 Don't install or use Anit-viruse, Net-security or firewall can speed up your internet (but your taking your own risk) tamatama14 (12747)
588649 2007-09-18 06:09:00 Not really, besides the problem is with the phone line, which AV or firewall has nothing to do with

AV might slow down your PC but only a **** firewall (or badly configured one) will slow down your internet
