588630 2007-09-06 22:36:00 As you might know, my download speed was always maxed out at ~160kB/s - (connect at ~1400kb/s)

I've also got 2 phone jacks in the house, the original one in the kitchen with filter and fax machine, and the extension down to my room with filter, phone, and DSL-502T.

Now just for fun I tried unplugging everything (no filters either) except for the modem, which I tried by itself in my room and also down in the kitchen on the end of a long Ethernet cable.

Now I get almost twice the download speed (~300kB/s - connect at 2784kb/s) in both rooms.

Is this a good indication of junk filters? what's the best way to test them?

Yes and you've already done the only thing you can do to test them except for trying each one individually to see if it's one or both that are faulty.

588632 2007-09-07 00:14:00 best thing to do is throw away plug-in filters and get a decent one installed in the ETP with a dedicated ADSL jackpoint.

It's not as flexible, but far less prone to causing problems.

588633 2007-09-07 02:44:00 I switched the D-link DSL-12MFfilter in my room for a dick-smith one I had lying around - now I'm connected at 3168kbps and downloads max out at 329kB/s

using one of the D-Links in the kitchen

Well I'm a bit happier now I've regained the speed I thought I lost in the 'unleashing' upgrade :)

588634 2007-09-10 02:33:00 well that's lovely, turns out while the DSE filter is much faster, I get disconnections with it.

So the D-Link ones are slow, the DSE is fast but unstable - would this be my line or the filter, I was thinking of trying a Dynalink, are these any good? or would it be an incompatibility with the DSE and the D-Link?

588635 2007-09-10 03:26:00 Can you link the disconnections with anything you're doing with the phones? If not it's unlikely to be a filter problem. With good filters your modem may be connecting at a higher rate than the modem/line supports long term. How often are the disconnections? PaulD (232)
588636 2007-09-10 03:40:00 Do you have a monitored alarm system? These will cause all sorts of problems which are best fixed by fitting a splitter at the telecom line entry point, with a dedicated wire pair to the computer jack point. Richard (739)
588637 2007-09-10 06:10:00 There's nothing connected to the line except for the Fax, Phone and DSL Modem.

The disconnections can happen anytime, using the phones doesn't seem to affect it

The router (D-Link DSL-502T) can do up to ADSL2+ (24Mbit down) so I don't think it's going too fast.

Maybe it's the line that can't handle?
