588404 2007-09-06 00:26:00 When I went to boot up my PC can not find C drive.

When I put the Partition Magic boot disks in, it comes up with error 701 - can't seem to access or boot from primary C drive.

D drive with all my data is still viisble in PM - but C drive is there but can not fix it.

Up until now, been running well, haven't loaded any new programs or hardware, but did just get the home network operating. 2 PC's only.....

588405 2007-09-06 00:37:00 Try this (service1.symantec.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
588406 2007-09-06 00:47:00 Tried CHKDSK.EXE - ut it didn't repair it as it just eternally reboots up to the stage where it's starting XP then repeats rebooting again.

How do I know if the system has a caching HDD controller - & if it has how do I access the menu & make changes?

SMART is disabled - well so it says in boot up. Funny, but I can't see any controll in the BIOS to enable/disable SMART so don't know where it's turned off from?

I don't use Drive Image.....

It's really annoying because I've just spent the last month getting this new system running properly & finally getting our home network operating - now this!

588407 2007-09-06 00:52:00 The option to turn smart on or off SHOULD be under the entry for the IDE / SATA hdd.

Press enter on the secondary/primary entry for the hdd..

Whatever this hdd is connected to (Primary master/slave or secondary master/slave).

588408 2007-09-06 01:04:00 I'll check that in a moment.
I'm just doing an IDE scan in DOS & it keeps reporting and ECC Error on the drive?
What does this mean?
I guess it's all part of the same problem?

588409 2007-09-06 03:27:00 Ok....have booted to XP

It is as slow as a wet week.

Seems to think it has 2 operating systems - Windows and Windows XP

How can I reconfigure or rewrite the BootINI file, so that it boots straight to XP.

As I think this is part of the problem.....

thanks

588410 2007-09-06 04:00:00 Copy and paste whats in boot.ini, so we can see whats in it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
588411 2007-09-06 05:16:00 Here it is....

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"
straka01 (310)
588412 2007-09-06 05:18:00 Delete the bottom line.

C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"

Save then reboot. That should fix it.

This

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S <-- should be WINDOWS - one word.

588413 2007-09-09 05:22:00 Thanks SG - that worked fine.

Now it boots up nice and fast but two minor iritations have now manifested themselves... you may have some ideas about how to sort them.

Often when I boot up and open OE to check my emails, then try to open a browser window - everything stalls (except OE). I can't open anything even Task Manager. The only way I can get around it is to reset/reboot the PC and try again. It's usually (not always) OK on the second time.

Another thing that really is a pest. When I go to open Word or Publisher or other programs, or when I try to get pictures for these from my HDD, the PC scans the network for AGESSSSSS before I can carry on. It doesn't just do it once but every time I go to get another photo or such for the same open program - it does it again and I may as well go & have a cuppa..... Maybe there's a setting I've got wrong so I can stop this happening. It never used to happen whan I had the two PCs networked with win98. And this one's not short on capacity - WinXP pro with Pentium 2.66Ghz processer & 2.5gb RAM.

Any ideas or suggestions most welcome. Thanks
