589620 2007-09-09 19:03:00 my pc had been freezing on me for a while, someone told me it was cause my cpu was overclocked wich it was but not by me or by choice, my motherboard kept overclocking it somehow. so i took it to my friend to make sure, he was looking for some jumpers he said would help clock my cpu back, but couldnt find them. he decided to switch out my cpu with his to make sure and it overclocked his cpu also but before we can mess with the bios the pc just died on us. could he have connected something wrong? it gets power cause i can charge my cellphone through the usb ports. deathracer (11825)
589621 2007-09-09 20:02:00 Some specs might help, and a better description of what you mean by "died". Pete O'Neil (6584)

Your friend has no idea what he is doing either. Why did you let him mess with it?

They haven't had jumpers on the board in ages.
And was his CPU even compatible with your board? Helps to check things like that first.

Freezing how exactly? On boot or in Windows?
If in Windows I'd be looking at what software is running in it.....

As for overclocked, all you need to do is reset the BIOS back to its defaults.
The motherboard doesn't do it itself, it does what the BIOS has been set to.

You can't claim that! You have no idea what the specs of the system are. My original skt A motherboard had jumpers on it to select 100 or 133mhz FSB, theres no reason why the OP couldn't have an older skt A system with jumpers on the motherboard!

589624 2007-09-09 21:46:00 Well the constant overclocking is obviously a wrong FSB or multiplier setting in BIOS or jumpers, Jumpers more likely as a BIOS setting may be reset with a change in CPU. so the board probably is old, but not so old it doesn't have USB.. hmm Agent_24 (57)

thats exactly what my friend was telling me something about the multiplier.
shop1.outpost.com thats my motherboard. i let him work on my pc cause i thought he knew what he was doing, and he had taken computer repair class for 1year wich is way better then me. the cpu is 3.06ghz but kept going up to 3.42ghz and sometimes on start up it would say overclocking failed press f1 to resume. and my pc would freeze while using windows for example surfing the internet, or just letting it sit there not doing anything. but in the bios it said overclocking was disabled.:waughh:

589626 2007-09-09 22:08:00 ECS.. well we know the problem now then

Seriously though, what revision is your board? v1.1? v2.1? v3.0?

www.ecs.com.tw

Shows latest BIOS update for V1.x and V2.x fixes "overclocking issue" - could this be it??

v3.x has different BIOS so make sure you get the right one, it _might_ help you

Of course since it won't boot right now, have you tried clearing the BIOS settings and using your old CPU?

589628 2007-09-09 23:37:00 To clear the BIOS settings you will either need to turn the PC off and use the clear cmos jumper (your motherboard manual should tell you where this is) or just pull the battery out for a few minutes.

Make sure you put the jumper and or battery back before you turn the PC on again
