| 589118 | 2007-09-07 22:14:00 | I'm restricted to dail-up internet (ClearNet) because I'm a rural user and can't afford satellite yet. I'd like some advice on dial-up connection speed. When I connect, my connection speed varies from session to session, with variations from approx 26 to 40 Kbps. Sometimes it connects even as low as 12 Kbps. 5 years ago when I moved to this address 48+ Kbps was the norm and was bearable. Now speeds in the 20 Kbps are the norm. :( What does the Kbps figure mean? (transmission speed/bandwidth?) Any tips how I could improve it? My computer modem is connected direct to the main phone jack via a zapcatcher (i.e. jack to zapcatcher, zapcatcher to modem). Thanks Mike |

| 589119 | 2007-09-07 22:20:00 | Could be line noise. Since youre rural, are there any electric fences nearby?? If you have a phone, if u dial out or press1, can u hear static?? If u do give telecom or whoever a ring and ask them to check for line noise. If the modem is internal, an external one especially made for rural areas, would be better. You may get better speeds. |
