2007-09-17 10:48:00 | Just did that thing. IT WORKED! Now since I'm very tired and want to go to bed, would it be safe to turn the computer off or leave it on for the night? Edit: It seemed to have paused on the Windows XP Home Edition loading screen, saying Please Wait...how long is it meant to take for this? I hope it's alright. Edit2: It comes up with welcome to Microsoft Windows setup screen as though I've recently purchased Windows? Am I gonna have to reinstall windows or something? :(

Edit2: It comes up with welcome to Microsoft Windows setup screen as though I've recently purchased Windows? Am I gonna have to reinstall windows or something? :( Nope it "has" reinstalled windows over the top of the old one. - As long as you selected the repair. What should happen is you run through as if its the first time and hopefully all your data will be there as well as programs. Just depending on how badly the damaged reg was will depend on if your data is visable. As i mentioned earlier, sometimes it doesn't always work. As just mentioned if it was me - and all your data is still there, save it to another media and once you are certain you have every thing, run recovery and reinstall it from fresh. I have seen these things before they may run OK for a day or two then start going unstable again. Parts of the reg may still be missing relating to certain programs you have. Let us know if your data is there and we can tell you the things to look for if you decide to do a full reinstall. |

2007-09-18 05:55:00 | Ok, well the computer seems fine for now/ Have run anti-virus scans e.g.NOD32 but nothing came up so I don't think it's a virus. All of my program data is there thankfully, but some of the programs won't open due to errors. Also, I opened up winamp and tried to listen to music but it said "Bad DirectSound driver". Are problems with hardware expected like this? | gellehar (12720) | |
2007-09-18 06:06:00 | The recovery program probably defaulted a lot of registry entries, you can fix non-working programs by reinstalling them (often you need to delete the program files folder first or the installer will run into problems) You may need to re-update direct X and/or reinstall your soundcard drivers to get winamp to work Or it might just be a case of winamp's default sound output being wrong. reconfigure the "directsound output" output plugin in preferences, choose a different device. I don't really like recovery installs of windows for that reason, not everything works well afterwards - which is why I am never impressed by people like HP

2007-09-18 06:31:00 | Yeah, HP are very crap. So what next? Put all of my program files, my documents, and what else on CD's in case I need to do a full re-install? | gellehar (12720) | |
2007-09-18 06:42:00 | Yeah, HP are very crap. So what next? Put all of my program files, my documents, and what else on CD's in case I need to do a full re-install? Good to see its going again, you found out as I mentioned before that some programs may not work due to damaged reg files. As Agent_24 mentioned you may have to uninstall them then reinstall them. Depending on what reg damaged was caused some may not uninstall because the paths required are not there. If that happens two things you can try - install Ccleaner from my sig open it and load tools/ uninstall - this may force the damaged program out - other wise try to reinstall over the top of the original. What you mention regarding backing up your data , documents, any desktop folders that conatin data, as well as Internet favorites, emails address book etc - you should be doing that any way. Programs have to be reinstalled, can't just copy the programs folder - that wont work. If you need to reinstall all data is then OK - the reason I say you should be backing up data any way is something many people dont do. What happens if one day ( and it will) allof a sudden your hard drive fails, or the whole system is not recoverable ? All data is gone. Back up and be safe. Guess ya wont be playing with the reg any more eh! PS: you will need to rerun windows updates as well. PSS: you can also run this - go to start/run type in "sfc /scannow" (without the " " note the space)this will check all sytem files as well, if its missing any it "Should" pick up from a folder in the OS the required parts. FootNote: it wasn't HP that caused all this problems you had - any PC would have done the same if the reg is damaged.- BUT I do agree HP's :yuck: esp since they don't supply a XP CD

2007-09-18 07:01:00 | I don't see why they can't just give you a normal XP (or whatever OS) disc and just let you have the option to do a full reformat and clean install if you need/want to. It isn't really that hard anyway, if you read what windows setup says and be careful. And the Vista installer is even easier... I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for it either - just for my sanity's sake But then I'll never buy a brand name PC anyway as I prefer to build my own. So I guess it doesn't matter!

Two reasons they dont 1. Pirating the software if standard XP CD, you cant use the recovery CD on any PC apart from an HP. 2. Cost - 1 CD ok Nothing to worry about in cost, but HP being a huge company---- if it cost them $1 per CD and they supplied 1 milliom PC's = 1 Million Dollars - don't supply, save all that money. |

2007-09-19 07:08:00 | Hello again. Since I reinstalled it a while ago, been having some hardware problems. I am on a wireless network, and have gotten the connection setup. But whenever I go to load the internet, it always asks me to connect to the main broadband connection or to Xtra LTD. I cannot get it to realise that the only network connection I have it the wireless connection. Any help? Also, it always asks me to install the "Network Controller". I'm not too sure what it is, I have a D-Link adaptor for the computer which allows me to connect to the main one, but I don't think it's that. I have the normal version of Windows XP, since it was purchased in 2001. Should I download SP2 directly, or do I have to download Sp1 then Sp2 separately?

2007-09-19 07:14:00 | The "network Controller" will be the driver for the wireless card. Go to the manufactures site and download and install the correct driver for the Card. To check - right click on My Computer /hardware tab / device manager and you should see a exclamation mark on items not installed. These need to be installed other wise they wont work correctly or at all.
