589454 2007-09-09 06:09:00 I think it would be more effective to have part of your equipment touching the case :stare:

I've always used one, but don't forget that susceptible parts usually come wrapped in anti-static plastic... it's more a double precaution.

"wireless antistatic wristband" sounds unlikely and is.

589458 2007-09-09 06:36:00 I agree with pctek, with one exception: if the customer is watching. If they are watching you, some of them have this weird notion that an antistatic wrist band is essential, so in this instance I would always use one - just to keep them feeling happy that the greatest of care is being taken with their equipment. Otherwise keeping earthed on the case is generally sufficient.

Good habits are always worthwhile. When the Mitel PABXs first arrived in NZ techs were treating them the same as the other gear they worked on but the chipsets were a new high density design that were much more susceptible to ESD and many of the systems died soon after being installed.

Some semiconductors can be subject to cumulative damage from handling so you only appear to get away with it.

589459 2007-09-09 07:47:00 Ummmm.... why are you quoting me? I agree with pctek - grounding is necessary, but there are plenty of other ways to ground yourself without using a wristband. Erayd (23)
589460 2007-09-09 08:15:00 Just pointing out an example (admittedly not a PC) where just touching the chassis wasn't sufficient. PaulD (232)
589461 2007-09-09 08:49:00 Interesting.... do you know what form of grounding was used then? It's harder to be more grounded than a direct earth through the case. Unless the case on those things wasn't grounded? Erayd (23)
589462 2007-09-09 09:14:00 I'm talking continuous wrist strap v's occasional touching chassis. In the workshop areas the benches had ion blowers as well. PaulD (232)
589463 2007-09-09 09:30:00 I'm talking continuous wrist strap v's occasional touching chassis. In the workshop areas the benches had ion blowers as well.Aah, gotcha. Erayd (23)
