I saw somewhere that someone did the same thing and he/she could get into safe mode, so I will do that and load the command prompt thing if it works hopefully. | gellehar (12720) | ||
| 589395 | 2007-09-16 10:48:00 | Just located a program that boots from either CD or floppy then allows you to rip out any files in the NTFS file system - your Iomega drive. I'll download it and see how it works then post back if it will do what you want. Tomorrow - I'm knackered:dogeye: and getting the evil eye from the Mrs :help: |

| 589397 | 2007-09-16 23:27:00 | Ok, so here's where I'm at. I have no Windows Setup Cd, since the PC came with Windows Pre-installed which means I can't get into recovery console or anything. I cannot boot into safe mode, last known configuraton or normally etc When I boot into safe mode it hangs on iomdisk.sys, which I've just found out that dad had a zip drive installed until a few months back. When I try to boot into normal mode, it hangs right after the loading screen, and doesn't show the welcome screen. Changing stuff around in the BIOS as recommended hasn't helped either. Now, would it be worth taking the hard-drive out and scanning it in another computer if I can find one? For viruses etc? Or would I have to back up all of my data? Or should I take it down to the PC experts shop in town? Many thanks in regards, Gellehar Iomdisk.sys may be hanging it if you deleted registry entries related to it - though I'm not sure (can someone confirm this: does safe mode hang displaying the driver that's causing the hang, or is it the next one that hasn't come up yet?) Changing stuff in the BIOS is not going to help because it's most likely a software problem. I doubt scanning your hard drive for viruses would fix the problem, but it might get rid of anything nasty on there as a bonus. You're going to need at least a windows CD or another PC to fix this. This is why I hate brand name PC makers who decide that giving you a real CD is not a good idea. But, can you boot from the hidden restore partition? (if it has one) then, you can nuke your entire windows and restore it. how useful is that? |

See if you can boot into safe mode with command prompt, then type in the command to enter the restore that way. If you cant theres a real small chance this may work - download This (tinyempire.com) its the ntldr loader in windows, its an exe file simply put a blank floppy in a working PC run the exe and it will load several files, put that floppy in your damaged PC and boot from it - follow on screen instructions. It may be enough to get it working to allow you to use restore and put it back to before the reg change. If that doesn't work and the command prompt restore doesn't work you will either need to borrow a XP CD from some one or take it to a PC repairer and get them to fix it for you. What's damn annoying to me is I have all the stuff right here to fix it Grrrrr:mad: - but thats no good to you. Is it a name brand PC ? if so you may be able to do what Agent_24 suggested and try a restore, it ususally gives you the option of repair or full install. |

| 589399 | 2007-09-17 04:31:00 | if it was an NTLDR problem, It wouldn't even get around to hanging halfway through loading windows I say registry problem since that's what Gellehar was randomly deleting things from to begin with |

| 589400 | 2007-09-17 04:55:00 | @Agent_24: Hidden restore partition? Where would i find that? @wainuitech: Nah, I can't even load up in safe mode with command prompt, nothing works. It's a HP computer, and I've been able to get into this HP Emergency Restore thing, it gives me a few options but I'm not too sure what to do with it. Perhaps that is the hidden restore thing, I press F12 when I boot up and it loads on occasion. |

| 589401 | 2007-09-17 05:18:00 | I think I may have a solution. I booted up HP System recovery :) It gives me an option to do a non-destructive repair, and when I go into that it says if you haven't tried System Restore press no, and it will boo System Restore directly. Will try it out soon :) I hope it works. | gellehar (12720) | ||

And before any one says it wont - I have had it happen several times, thats why I always take a copy of a drive before doing any of that. If that doesn't work then its a full reinstall, but then all your data would be lost, so you would need to have the drive put on another PC to copy it off or connect a removable drive and use something like Knoppix live CD to copy to the removable drive. Agent_24 - if you notice I did say "theres a real small chance" since I see under your user name - computer "Specialist" then you will also know that what is Meant to happen doesn't always happen. I seen it many time where some one says something wont work yet against all logic it does.  |
