589344 2007-09-09 13:46:00 ive ripped a few tapes to mp3 and ive surprised myself at the quality also. normally all that's required to clean up is something to remove the noise/hiss. eg even a program like goldwave is enough to record and theres enough features to clean up the audio and cut to size etc.

as long as the tape is in good nick, no reason why you cant get a decent rip! if i wanna maximise the quality. then best to rip to wave format and then burn the wave files with your usual burning program.

i tend also to have the dolby b or c off as can lose some top end. i find dolby tends to act as a compressor gate in that it sucks up the top but also reduces the overall dynamic range. can get more accurate noise reduction if its recorded with no dolby.

Anyone tried ripping with LAME V0 or even to another codec (ogg/flac)?

Forgive the slight hijack, but I figure it is still relevant to the original thread

If I'm not mistaken, LAME is used in Audacity as a plug-in.

..further, .ogg/OGG is an extension that Audacity can create to also.

589347 2007-09-09 21:02:00 I just use dbpoweramp converter I think its called, can convert to mp3 lame and blade and wav.

Audacity has add ons to convert from wave to mp3 also.

589348 2007-09-09 21:34:00 Just as an alternative way of actually doing the transfer ... I now use my DVD player to record a DVD while playing my tapes (or LPs or 8-track tapes or ...), then rip the audio off and use Audacity to split the file. Works well, and I don't have to hook up any extra gear to my computer :)

Just another method to throw into the mix!
