589526 2007-09-09 09:59:00 Just having a play with Ubuntu & Kubuntu - just to see how the other half live :) Alls going quite well except one thing thats really Pi**ing me off.
Network sharing.
Heres what I have done so far:

Installed Samba and it sees all Windows PC's on the network, and can connect to them/ open files etc - Good there.

Problem -
I Can see the Linux PC in the Network from all the Windows PC's BUT even though I have made up test folders and shared them, set the permissions to allow every one it still wont allow me to open them, comes up with needing user names and passwords.

So I made up a different user, allocated a password - still nothing. Endless loop.

What do I need to do to enable file sharing and have it working so Windows PC's can access Linuk shared folders. ( with out user names and passwords if that possible)

PS the system is installed on the drive not on live CD.

589527 2007-09-09 10:23:00 Have a look at the Samba docs (samba.org). Note the caution against not using passwords. vinref (6194)

You probably need to use the smbpasswd command to setup the samba passwords (based on the unix user accounts).

589529 2007-09-09 10:48:00 I just have the following in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
security = share

No passwords
Also I share 2 directories, both are owned by root, however one allows users to read/write, while the other is read only for users

In theory you should have passwords, but this network is used by trusted users, so I don't bother

589530 2007-09-09 11:05:00 Im same as lysdexic, cant be bothered with permissions.. its either R/W or R/O...

Not sure if this will still work but I threw this together aaaaages ago, it may be of use to you:

589531 2007-09-09 20:02:00 Setting the Samba permissions doesn't affect the underlying permission for the files & folders. You can set Samba to force a user & permissions for the share, but this will only affect files created via the share - you can still write files from the Linux side with the native permissions which may render files inaccessible from Samba. 589532 2007-09-10 01:35:00 I'm a bit out of my comfort level here but could it be that Windows can't read the Linux file system?

HTH

Thats what samba does - allows windoze to see and write to linux files systems via a network.

Good luck with samba!!
Seriously, it is one of the more difficult things to setup IMO...
Somehow, I managed to get it all working...
I will PM you the contents of my /etc/samba/smb.conf file if it will help.

[EDIT: No I won't, it's too long.....]
