589516 2007-09-09 07:59:00 My shiny new ASUS 1814BLT drive has great difficulty reading some Imation CD-RW disks that I have been using. It also does not sense when a blank of one of these CD-RW disks is inserted, prior to a writing session. In both instances it mucks around with the disk for some time, and then gives up.

The same disks are fine in my old Ricoh CD burner, reading and writing.

Has anyone had a similar problem please?

589517 2007-09-09 08:08:00 Some drives just do not like some brands of media.

Have you tried a different brand of CD in your new drive to rule out a general hardware fault?

589518 2007-09-09 08:16:00 I've had a bit of trouble with imation cds in my Liteon drive... one 10 pack had 3 duds :( Shortcircuit (1666)
589519 2007-09-09 08:51:00 Ive got the same burner here, but dont use CDRW's. (the IDE not the SATA)

It burns fine when I use Nero/Nerovision tho.

WHAT are you using to burn whatever to the CDRW?

Are you sure the cables are in properly since its SATA??

589520 2007-09-09 09:12:00 There is no trouble playing DVDs, CDs, or Imation CD-R disks, which I have a number of. Just the Imation CD-RW disks. I haven't tried another brand yet. rumpty (2863)
589521 2007-09-09 09:19:00 My problem ones are CD-R imation... got one right here using as a coaster :) Sorry, never tried the CD-RW Shortcircuit (1666)

I've used both XP's burning facility, and K3b, both with these CD-RW disks. I haven't burnt any DVDs or CD-R disks yet, nor have I installed the bundled Nero software so far.

I thought CDRWs would be ideal for playing around while I was "bedding in" the new ASUS. And there has been no problem with them on my Ricoh CD burner.

589523 2007-09-10 08:24:00 Same problem except mine struggles with DVD+R Disks. It will play them after much fussing around ie inserting them several times till it submits. Tried TDK and Sony DVD+R for recording no go, but no problem with DVD-R Disks so I use those all the time now. Why its so fussy I just dont know. Clod (7853)
589524 2007-09-10 20:53:00 Newer firmware will often fix such problems, but some drives just do not behave well on certain brands/types of media. autechre (266)
589525 2007-09-10 21:33:00 One thing I have found is lots of people have problems with RW disks, the theory on them is OK being rewritable, but almost every time the RW wont work, yet R's will doesn't matter if they are CD-R DVD-R, or what make and model of Drive.
The RW's seem to have a high failure rate. I certainly wouldn't trust any important data to them.

As for CD writing programs, the one I use all the time is Ashampoo (www2.ashampoo.com) , offten the magazines come out with free editions on the Cover DVD, espicially magazines like Aust PC User & Aust PC Authority, these work great and can do just about anything.

Maybe NZ PC World should put these programs on Their Cover DVD's.
