589384 2007-09-09 02:31:00 HELP!!!

Ok, well I was mucking around in Regseeker, searching through the registry looking for files that I had uninstalled to delete for good, and all was well. Then I accidently clicked on a file which took me to the registry editor, and then I went searching through there for the folders of uninstalled programs. I found most of them, but then after I had deleted some of the files and closed the registry editor, the computer went all slow. I tried to close up regseeker and had to use the task manager, but when I clicked the ctrl+alt+del it came up with a box of things that you would normally see in Windows Terminal Server such as Task Manager, Close, Change Password, Log Off and one or two other things. I then proceeded to open up HijackThis and get a logfile to see if there was any viruses on the computer, but when it had finished the scan, an error came up. And I couldn't save the logfile :( Now, I restarted the computer, hoping to go to the last known good configuation. Whenever I reboot, it goes past the windows splash screen but won't show the log on screen, it just goes black. I turn the computer off, and try to start up in safe mode, but it freezes after trying to load some of the drivers or something, and I can't do crap about it. So I can't boot up normally, nor can I go to the last known configuration, nor can I boot up in safe mode to use System restore.

When I was going through deleting registry values, it was of games that were no longer on the computer, and programs. I recall deleting Cloudmark files, Need For Speed files, Comodo Firewall files, Tiger Woods files, and quite a few more which I can't remember.

I am quite pissed off with myself, and need some help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

589385 2007-09-09 03:50:00 Should have used ccleaner to get rid of invalid entries in the registry.

You shouldn't touch or delete entries in the registry, if u have no idea what you're doing!

Not much else u can do, since you've tried everything already.

Might have to format.

589386 2007-09-09 04:03:00 You could try doing a Non - Distruct reinstall, that way all your data will hopefully still be intact.

While this may not repair the system fully it may allow you to at least start in safe mode to copy your data off to a removable drive.

To do a Non- Distruct -

place the XP cd in the Drive, boot from it
Agree to all the licences etc F8
Next screen will give options, Install windows, repair and a couple of others, select Install Windows ( enter)
It will then look for a previous install - if it finds it ( you will see it in the box) select R
It will delete windows files, then reload - you will need your 25 digit product key at some stage - follow the onscreen istructions.
NOTE: if it doesn't locate your old OS STOP! as any further actions may result in wiping your data.

The registry is not a place for manually cleaning unless you know what you are doing.

589387 2007-09-09 04:12:00 Yeah, well that just sucks. Cannot find the XP Setup CD at all, and I'm not sure what to do about it. Perhaps I will have to take the computer in to the experts, maybe they can do something :( gellehar (12720)
589388 2007-09-09 04:15:00 If you can't locate the XP CD, borrow one from someone, as long as you have your product key, which legally should be someplace on the Case - then it should install from any XP home (usually). If its XP Pro - that could be a different story.

You can sometimes run restore from command prompt, No cd Required -depending on how bad the system is, I have done it myself, its a 50 /50 if it will work.
Heres How (pcsupport.about.com)

Or copy this down:

If you can't get into Safe mode, you can pick 'Safe Mode with command prompt' and type in 'CD \WINDOWS' and then 'SYSTEM32\RESTORE\RSTRUI.EXE' to start System Restore without having to run the Windows interface.

Yep, best course of action here.

589390 2007-09-09 04:57:00 sometimes as an emergency fix you can get away with deleting the registry file altogether ( or more responsibly renaming it ), most versions of windows keep a back-up and will revert to that if the main one is missing.

Try at your own risk!

589391 2007-09-09 22:57:00 That backup one might be a clean one from the first install of windows, however.

Best way would be to boot recovery console or put hdd in another PC and copy over the registry backups from the last system restore point in place of the ones you nuked

I had to do it once when my old hard drive was clunking occasionally and corrupting things

support.microsoft.com <- What I used

If you can't find a CD to boot recovery console, putting the drive in another PC should also work

589392 2007-09-16 09:48:00 Ok, so here's where I'm at.

I have no Windows Setup Cd, since the PC came with Windows Pre-installed which means I can't get into recovery console or anything.
I cannot boot into safe mode, last known configuraton or normally etc
When I boot into safe mode it hangs on iomdisk.sys, which I've just found out that dad had a zip drive installed until a few months back.
When I try to boot into normal mode, it hangs right after the loading screen, and doesn't show the welcome screen.
Changing stuff around in the BIOS as recommended hasn't helped either.

Now, would it be worth taking the hard-drive out and scanning it in another computer if I can find one? For viruses etc? Or would I have to back up all of my data? Or should I take it down to the PC experts shop in town?

Many thanks in regards,

Gellehar
